Lightbulb US History/Culture - Lacking :(

Not sure about others, but I am fascinated by other cultures around the world. Mainly Europe and Asia. Their history and culture pre-dates the US' by a HUGE margin. We don't even compare.

I know the US was "seeded" with defectors from England and the like. So technically, that is where we all came from. I just feel jipped that I live in a country that has no real "history" or "culture" to speak of. Nothing like that of Europe and Asia.

The USA is only 229 years old. That's nothing. That's a drop in the bucket compared to everyone else.

Anyone else enjoy history/culture abroad? I love it and can't seem to get enough.

guess this is why theres an off topic section. odd topic. but i am becoming more and more versed in celtic history. being mainly scottish and irish (throw in some german for good measure) it is a personal subject. a highlight of my year is going to the scottish highland games in vista, ca. its the one day i can wear my kilt without my wife being annoyed by it. and i can get me some haggis. mmmmmmm haggis. good stuff.

Since I am a native american, almost 50%, my history goes back quite aways.

But I do know what you mean to a point. Yes the country has not been around long but what has it done. Weither you agree or disagree with politics, please donot get onto them, this country has affected almost every other one on earth be it positive or negitive.

So alot of it comes down to what you make of the culture and history. There is alot of it out there but at the sametime it is differnet from alot of the rest of the worlds.

Ahhh indeed, to quote the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt

To each eye the outlines of a great civilization present a different picture. In the wide ocean upon which we venture, the possible ways and directions are many…and lead to essentially different conclusions

I do. I enjoy learning about Europe, China, Japan, Egypt, etc… I would say the Roman Empire has been my main focus so far.

I prefer not to dwell on how long we have been around as a country but rather what we have accomplished (and it is alot).

FWIW... each new generation starts out from scratch. The only culture they have is that which is given to them by their parents. As far as I'm concerned...having met a lot of tourists... there's a lot of scarcity in culture worldwide.

I prefer to view it as people fleeing the persecutions of England at the time, not defectors.

The U.S. has plenty of history. Sure its not even 300 years worth of history, bit its about quality, not quantity. I love U.S. history, especially very early colonial type stuff. However there were very few dull periods.
