Default People are nuts over at AVS!

I just perused AVS....looks like they are posting again and there is a thread now denouncing Ratatouille for "banding" issues.

Some are claiming they can't watch Blu-Ray or HD-DVD due to these issues....it burns their eyes.....OMG!!!!!

WTF is wrong with those people? Why is everything a problem?

I don't see any issues with the disc at all.....it gets great reviews, but we have these so-called experts who claim it's all flawed and crap.

Sorry for the rant......I should just stay here.

I used to really like AVS......I'm beginning to despise it now.

Since they can't enjoy our awesome exclusives, they want to make sure no one enjoys them. They will say anything to convince themselves (usually won't convince others) that their format will be around in 2-3 years.

shoot, even Peter Bracke gave it 5 of 5 PQ!

"In my recent Blu-ray review of 'Cars,' I raved about that disc's five-star video quality. It's a tough act to follow, but somehow 'Ratatouille' looks even better. Pixar and Disney present the film in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video at its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1, and every single pixel is, well, perfect. This is simply the best high-def presentation I've ever seen of an animated feature."

...6 out of 5 stars?!!

I saw that thread too and just shook my head. Wonder if it could be his choice of display?

AVS is fine if you avoid the Bluray/HDDVD area.

Perhaps his HD-DVD player contaminated his display?

Just had a brain wave. Maybe it could be Carol Ann from Poltergeist trying to get out of the tv? Stranger things have happened.

I can sympathize with you. I've been a member there for years and it's almost painful to go back there now. I was over there earlier this morning, reading a Blu post and someone stated their local bestbuy was now offering more shelf space to Blu. I was just in my local bestbuy yesterday and noticed the same thing. There's at least twice as much shelf space for Blu vs hddvd. So I read further with interest.

As you might suspect, some moron had to chime in his bestbuy offered a 50/50 shelf rate but they diminish and replenish their hddvd stock much more often.

Some peoples children...

It will probably be much better with the new rules in place, long over due.

One has to remember, however, that many of those posters are only about 14.

The new rules will most likely hobble the boards more than help them . . . fear of discussing ANYTHING subversive because the mods/owners can't handle their own site.

I was waiting for someone to try to show it. I guess they have never been out into fog. Since that is exactly how it acts. And if you happen to be removed from it and can see the top of it you can get some real cool affects to your eyes.

If people want to complain about it let them since that is very real looking. i give credit to them for making it that real.

I seem to recall that same guy at AVS seeing banding on something else that nobody else saw it on.

In order to make that visable here is what that guy did. Since I asked how bad he had to make it to get there.

Quote:
It was done in Photoshop. I literally halved the histogram levels and trippled the saturation. Totally unrealistic, but I thought it might help some people realize this disc was produced about as well as you could hope for. As another poster pointed out, the bands have dithering in them to make the steps far less apparent. In my estimation, it's handled about as well as one could hope for.
And yes this guy did see banding on something else as well.

I just got this message, saying that the best thing on that site -- the guessing at sales percentages -- will no longer be allowed to continue:

Quote:
Despite markrubin's efforts, the powers that be have decided that there should be no prediction threads. I do not know if they object to the application of the scientific method the thread encourages (examine existing data, form a hypothesis, have Nielsen collect sampling data for us, analyze said data), or if they are against us having fun in their forum or if they are just against the continuation of the most peaceful and harmonious thread from before the shutdown. In any case, this may be the last week of the contest if they do not change their minds.

To that end, this week will be run by PM again. There will be no updates until I PM out the final one with my prediction. It just takes too long to send out the ~35 PMs just to let people see the prediction table. Reminders on Monday, as always.

If you wold like to contact the administrators with polite comments in support of the contest, you can PM all three at once by using the following for the recipient's usernames:

Alan Gouger; David Bott; Chris Blount
Well, I guess the numbers look so bad for HD-DVD, that the only solution is to get rid of them all together!

It appears to me that the most recent way AVS is attempting to discriminate against Blu-ray is by attempting to appear unbiased, while they are actually showing bias against positive Blu-ray news.

Ratatouille, Spidey, and Pixar are going to absolutely SMASH HD-DUD next week, and everyone knows it. We may hit the first 80:20 week!

They can't allow the Nielsen data anymore, because it's becoming so one-sided, it's causing newbees to purchase Blu-ray over HD-DVD! They just can't stand that!

That banding is caused by a limitation of 8-bit color, something both formats share

Maybe he's watching it on a Toshiba television.
