Default blu-ray read only drive for 130 quid this december

heres a few paragraphs
Quote:
Jelmer Veldman, marketing manager for PLDS in Europe. says that because it is a read-only device, "we are able to reduce the price to a level that makes it easier to try this next generation format and users can now enjoy high definition playback on their PC."

Instead of spending hundreds of pounds on a stand-alone Blu-ray player, one can use an HDMI cable to connect their PC with a TV set and enjoy high definition using their BD-ROM drive as their Blu-ray playback device, he adds.

The DH-4O1S also sports a Serial ATA interface. The retail pack includes an extra silver bezel and a SATA cable to connect the drive to the motherboard of the PC and a Cyberlink Blu-ray software package for playback of Blu-ray media in high definition

The drive will be available from December for an estimated retail price of £125. µ

EDIT: Oops, its £189

My first DVD "player" was the DVD drive in my old, old Gateway. I did some elaborate wiring and IR setup to get it to play in the living room while the computer sat in my home office. Fun! Wanna know the first standalone DVD player brand I bought? Yep, Toshiba. 6-disc carousel. I really miss a 6-disc carousel (I could put in three movies and their special-feature discs at the same time).

But I digress.

I joined the Sony camp with the PS2. Stood in line on its release date. The Toshiba player lasted many years, finally giving up the ghost a few months before the PS3 came out.

I joined sony camp with PS1 on 1998 (although most of thing that I bought before that are also sony)
well, fortunately for me, I don't have to stand in line, but I got my PS2 two weeks after its release in Japan. I am a japanese product freak, and always try to get japanese version first.
Well, my PS2 meets its tragic death when I accidentally connected it to Indonesian 220V (Japanese use 110V). A big blow occured. Bought Asian version of slim PS2 after that

Default HELP with BluRay setup on PC

Hi Guys,

I'm building a media centre PC and want to have bluray movie playback on it. System is good spec with Quad core Q6600 2.4 GHz, 2 Gb ram, Vista home premium, ATI 2400XT gfx card (weak I know but is compatible with HD playback). Not got the bluray optical drive yet

My big worry is that the movie playback quality wont look as good as say a PS3 or will be disappointing on my 1080p 46" telly. Is movie playback any good on the PC now??

What do I need to make sure its good / PS3 rivalling in quality?

Any advice most appreciated.

make sure your ATi have HDMI port. Also, I'll let you know that some titles such as fantastic four 2, is not playable (at least for me) using cyberlink powerdvd. an upgrade might be needed. my last update was 30 october.

If I were to choose, I will choose nVIDIA over ATi

How is the bluray picture quality on the PC assuming i have the right software?? My gfx card has HDMI on it. Is it as good as a PS3 or am I dreaming to expect that sort of picture quality?

it really depends on your resolution. My PS3 uses 720p, while my laptop uses 1050p (1680x1050). It looked a bit better on my laptop (ATi XT2600). but if you buy a graphic card that is capable of 1080p and hdmi, and a monitor that is HD ready (meaning HDMI, HDCP compliant, and 1080p or more), then you might get better quality. Mind that screen size matter as well to some people.

Sound quality. as of my laptop, it has 4 speakers, and 1 subwoofer. It does great for blu-ray

i've got a 46 inch 1080p samsung, its an amazing tv. Runs my 360 and HD-DVD in 1080p, movies look amazing, games too! The gfx card has HDMI out and will do 1080p.

I will get a PS3 one day, but not impressed with the games at the moment and dont want one just for bluray movies.

Have just put together a zalman HD135 case + Quad core Q6600 2.4 Ghz intel processor + 2Gb ram, Vista, 500Gb drive, tv tuner and the ATI 2400XT. Not got a bluray optical drive yet, am tempted so it makes this one hell of a HTPC.

Just been worried how complex it is to get the PC to run Bluray and have it look good. Want to run at 1080p. Think I will go for it on the PC and make it work somehow!!
