Default PS3 sales up 130% in December!!!

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10132039-52.html

I found an interesting part of this article that gives us an idea of how many PS3s were sold in December and the numbers seem very impressive assuming it turns out to be true.

below is what the vice president of Sony sales said

We've had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year. Two thousand eight was a pivotal year for PlayStation with the best software line up in the industry, a dramatic expansion of PlayStation Network including the launches of the video delivery service and the beta of the PlayStation Home," Ian Jackson, vice president of sales for Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in a statement. "Early internal data points to an increase of more than 130 percent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season--since Black Friday--and we're also seeing a growth of nearly 40 percent in total PS3 hardware sales for the calendar year. We remain confident this momentum will continue into the new year."

So the PS3 sold 378,000 and if sales increased by 130% wouldnt that make the December sales a little shy of 900,000? I know we will know exact numbers on July 15th NPD will release its December U.S. sales data.

hey, it just amazes me as I read everywhere that PS3 sold 75% less than last year in december ... of course the "official" source for many people is VGchartz!!!

I highly doubt the PS3 sold that many in Dec alone. He must be talking worldwide sales and not just the US. PR guys tend to use tricky wording in order to boost the companies up and make things look as best as possible.

Some reports say X360 is at 28 million shipped and PS3 is at 20 million. That means the following average per year sales:

PS3 = 10 million
X360 = 9.3 million

We all know that the media is very unfair the way they compare the 2 systems. The other system had a 1 year headstart of course they are going to sell more, but when you break down the figures as you did we all know the PS3 is selling better in its lifespan. Why cant the MEDIA get this through their heads? Are they that shallow that they dont realize the other system has been out 1 year longer hello? Am I missing something here?

The media follows the advertising dollars and all things negative.

Because it's easier to go hey this has sold 28 and this has sold 20, so the 28 is better then 20 without having to actually do journalism and research.

Blu-ray and PS3 have both done really well in the Pro-MS/HD DVD/Downloads/Anti-Sony atmosphere the media and mainstream press has created.

Not in a million years has X360 shipped 28m, closer to 25-26m.

PS3 afaik has shipped 19.5m to the end of November (or that was the planned amount, not sure whether it changed IRL).

Microsoft said today that it had sold more than 28 million Xbox 360s since introducing the game console in November 2005. That compares with more than 20 million PlayStation 3 consoles sold by Sony since it debuted the device in November 2006, according to Microsoft executives.

If they have indeed shipped 28m, then there are many, many unsold boxes sitting on shelves (> 2m!) and last time MS stuffed the channel, no one was impressed, least of all retailers.

I doubt that Microsoft could get away with counting RRoD replacements as "sales".

Having said that, Microsoft sold what, 11 million consoles before even putting out their first fix related to RRoD?

Early consoles WILL RRoD, it's just a matter of when, and newer ones do too, just at a slower pace. It's not at all unreasonable to believe that there have been 6 million RRoDs. I've had 3 personally. :P

I really think 6 million are from RROD - lol

seriously... its a 360 because it goes from microsoft to your house and back to microsoft. All my friends with the exception of 1, have had to send theirs back at least twice.

Er, my PS3 has been running 3 years strong? XBOX360 didn't take a year before the RROD started? Shame on you!

EDIT: I misunderstood. Perhaps you meant early xbox360 consoles will RROD? Apologies if that's the case.

Well I have 2 360's (to my shame), mainly because it took 4 months for M$ to return my RRoD 360 (lots of phone calls and lots of lies from M$, and some people wonder why I despise them so much). I'm guessing that I'm not the only person that has done this either.

I know I have bought 3 Xbox 360 from the shops but I only have one in my house right now, on the first two I got a refund from MS.

So what would that count as, three sales or one?

I think a portion of their sales now are from frustrated owners who just relent, buy an arcade as a replacement, and slap their old HD on the new system.

When mine died I sent it back to Microsoft and went and bought a new one. When I received mine back I returned the one I bought.

I know I'm not the only one...
