The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Francis Lawrence)
Kadokawa will release Francis Lawrence's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), on Blu-ray in Japan on April 18th.
There will be two editions. One, the standard edition, will have two BD-50 discs, one for the film in scope ratio, and the other for extra features.
The other version, called a Premium Edition, will contain three BD-50 discs and two DVDs. The first BD will have the film in scope ratio, the second will have the film in its IMAX version, and the third will have extra features. The DVDs are a copy of the film, and a bonus DVD-5 disc of Japanese language extras.

The third BD in the set (Disc 4) corresponds to all of the extras from the JB HiFi exclusive Australian version.
What is unclear is whether the BD with the IMAX version has shifting aspect ratios, or if it simply presents the entire film at 1.78:1. I would assume the former, but I suppose you never know. The listing does not appear to mention the number of minutes of footage in IMAX.
As noted, the fifth disc is the DVD of Japanese language extras. From the translation, it contains a 20 minute video of the Japanese voice actors on a talk show, and 30 minutes of interviews with the Japanese voice actors.

Will this release have Englush subtitles for the film?
The Amazon listing now says there are English subtitles for the film, but this is not confirmed yet on the Kadokawa web site, even though the first film apparently had English subtitles also.
I will confirm when I receive my set, which should hopefully be by Monday/Tuesday.
The actual specs turned out slightly different from what was proposed.
All presentations of the film include original English and Japanese dubbed audio and English and Japanese subtitle options, as well as Japanese commentary subtitles.
All of the English language extras (excluding trailers) contain optional Japanese subtitles.
All subtitling is in white font. The English subtitles use typewritten font.
Breakdown of contents:
[Show spoiler]Disc One is the DVD version of the film. Containing all of the extras and commentary on Disc Three (scope version). Please note that the DVD is NTSC format and locked to DVD Region 2.
Disc Two is the IMAX version of the feature, with shifting aspect ratios. The audio commentary is included, but there are no video extras. The only video content on this disc is the Kadokawa logo, the main menu, and the IMAX feature.
The IMAX disc was the version I watched, and the film looks spectacular, but the IMAX footage is a sight to behold.
Disc Three contains the scope version of the film, with the commentary, as well as English and Japanese trailers, a short extra (4:38) with the Japanese voice cast (not English-friendly), and the sneak peek for Divergent. A short Japanese trailer for Divergent rounds out the extras.
Disc Four contains the rest of the English-language extras, including the ones exclusive to Target in the USA. There is also a selection (4:32) of interviews with the cast that have Japanese text questions--this extra may be exclusive to the Japanese release.
Disc Five is the DVD of Japanese language extras. As mentioned earlier, it contains over 50 minutes of content with the Japanese voice actors. These extras are not English-friendly. Please note that the DVD is NTSC format and locked to DVD Region 2.
The discs are housed in a DVD-sized digipack, which uses similar artwork to the Target digipack released in the US. Kadokawa have also included a Japanese commentary book (which contains information in Japanese, as well as color photos), and a small leaflet with what appears to be a excerpt from the Mackingjay novel in Japanese. Finally, there is also a small two-sided flyer advertising both Divergent and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. The whole set comes in a slipbox with the artwork pictured, which comes wrapped with the usual Japanese Obi info slip and a soft, clear plastic case.

Any idea if picture quality is better than French release? I can provide some screens from it, if anyone is able to also provide some frame accurate screens from JPN release in order to make a proper comparison.
Just curious if this is the best.
I think JP is overall the best (highest bitrate) but also very expensive. And with a moving picture I'm not sure how much difference you will see.

will depent on screen size or 4k upscale. But if the bitrate does not limit the videquality with 30mbit.. a higher bitrate wont do any better (only a example)
doubt there is much (if at all) room to improve on the US/CA disc i watched recently on a 108 inch screen.
Catching Fire was considerably softer compared to The Hunger Games (between the US editions). It can be chalked up to the bit-rate being so much more condensed.
Right you are I looked at the screens and I see no clear winner. JPN still has some banding issues compared to FRE. But FRE suffers from detail loss in other scenes.
I don't own it yet, but I would guess the JP one. It is the edition with the best encode quality and that retains 24 bit audio. It has all versions (aspect ratios) and all extras.
The FR one handles the occasional banding but has other issues and no 24 bit audio. Or the other pros of the JP set.
Is the Premium Edition set g2 blu-ray size? For the last year I've been trying to decide between getting the Japan sets, Target sets, and the UK steelbooks for all these movies but the last 2 Target sets have been g1 size while Hunger Games was g2. From the looks of the stock pics it looks g2 but I want to make sure cuz I have not seen any pics of the actual set. And does anyone think the Mockingjay Pt. 1 Amazon.co.jp set will also be blu-ray size? Thanks.
