Default 7.1 channel audio

Do you have to have a tv that supports HDMI 1.3 to get 7.1 from your ps3?

This is correct. No TV can output 7.1. It's a joint effort between the playback unit (BD Player) and the receiver unit. TVs only support Stereo output. Although, some claim to "create the effect of surround"... which is major BS because you need speakers behind you to get surround.

uhmmm like you said "create the effect of surround" that means virtual surround buddy, not like true surround and it is not BS. It is actually true, atleast with my ps3 and tv it is. I just finished watching SWAT (of course blu version) like 2 mins ago and during the movie I asked my brother "doesn't that sound like surround?" so yeah, it is not BS. Although, the volume does have to be turned up a bit but Sony is not BSing.

I'm sorry, but 'virtual surround', as you put it, is not even close in comparison to actual surround. I know exactly what you are talking about as I have been in the presence of both. My reaction to 'virtual surround' was, "Yeah, I guess it does sound a bit like surround sound. Boost it by about 400% and then we'll talk surround sound out of TV speakers." So, I agree with you that it sounds like surround... but it is an extremely small fraction of the real thing.

...unless you architectually designed and built the room to specifically manipulate the sound waves from your TV perfectly. Then I could see this 'virtual surround' sounding equivalent to a real system. But, that would cost more to do than just buying a system. LOL

so that's why just setting your sound on your tv speakers to surround sound causes the peoples voices to be drowned out by the background music?
