Warner Bros The Avengers (1998)

Warner will be releasing The Avengers (1998) on August 12th.

Quote:
Synopsis

Jeremiah Chechick directed this $60 million adaptation of the whimsical 1961 British TV spy series, imported to the United States five years later for ABC airing (beginning 3/28/66), followed by The New Avengers (CBS, 1978-79). In the feature-length version, secret agent John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) and Emma Peel (Uma Thurman) face a meteorological menace as they track sinister super-villain Sir August de Wynter (Sean Connery), threatening to blitz Britain with blizzards and other extreme weather. Vocal cameo by Patrick Macnee (the original TV Steed)

Yeah, they really took the essence of this movie and expanded on it, like any good remake should.

Just have a great picture of Uma on the cover, and I'll probably buy it!

I guess there probably isn't enough interest for them to give this a proper director's cut. From most accounts, this was butchered by the studio. http://web.archive.org/web/200003030.../avmissng.html

I can't say I liked it much myself, but I am a big Ralph Fiennes and Sean Connery fan. And Ms. Thurman in that costume....

Marvels movie isn't a remake. It's a DIFFERENT "The Avengers" universe. Plus the comics predate the Britist TV show by a couple of years.

Now on topic: This 1998 movie is terrible, the UK TV show from the '60s is better.

Man don't want to offend anyone who actually likes this, but how does Warner release this POS movie when they've got tons of stuff that people actually want.

Gotta admit though Uma did look good in this one. At least she wasn't drag queened up like in Batman and Robin.

Damn, what are those dudes over at WB smoking lately? What's up with some of these catalog announcements? Torque, Exit Wounds, The Man Who Knew Too Little, The Avengers??!? Some really bizarre choices right there...

Even the Paramount side of things has been a bit lackluster. I guess they're happy selling DVDs and DVD-Rs for most of those titles...

Did anyone notice that the title of this movie sounds the same as that superhero movie starring the Irin man, Throw, Hulk and The captain? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

I remember seeing this on opening weekend back in 98 and being super excited for it, despite knowing that there where no screenings held for critics. I was 15 at the time and a lot less cynical and more susceptible to hype... I remember watching it with my mother (who used to watch the show when she was a kid) and when the credits hit the screen at the end, we both looked at each other in a bewildered sate and left the cinema... we didn't even say anything to each other on the way out! This film more than any other has made me a lot less excited by trailers ever since ; at least 50% of what you see in the trailer isn't in the finished film! I used to think the 2 1/2 hour cut would improve things, but in retrospect this was badly thought out from the beginning ; Finnes just doesn't have that lightness of touch for the role and Uma (as gorgeous as she is) doesn't seem flirty enough to make it work... And Sean should have known better!

Absolutely agree. In fact it was the last film I considered walking out of (that and Strange Days).

I don't understand why people assume a DC would be any better, then again the film has nowhere to go but up in current form. Is there a website that details the footage that was excluded from the released version?
