I don't think you can get a good CRT anymore and you probably wouldn't want a 196 pound TV, but they used to be around $1000. Great blacks and just overall great PQ, though they stop at about 34" and 720p/1080i.

If I were to get a new TV today, I'd look at the new LCDs with better refresh rates and higher contrast ratios. Of course, even a 40" on sale is about $2000 or even a little higher.

If you can make it (and fight the crowds) Wal-mart will have a 42" Polaroid 1080p LCD HDTV for $798 on Black Friday.

Amazon has a Panasonic 42" plasma for like $1100.

I like LCD's better, but that's just me.

1080p HDTV under $1000? Good luck! I recommend applying for several credit cards and do it right. Anything you buy for under $1000 right now will be something that you will most likely want to replace/upgrade in a year or so... thus you'll ending up spending more than just buying something better now.

If you wait till Black Friday you can get a really cool 46' Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD tv from Circuit City thats normally priced at $24-2599 for the price of $1299. It 300 past your budget but its one heck of a great picture and deal plus its a great great saving. Spend $300 more. Get a awesome deal and picture

Here is a solid 42" 720p Philips LCD TV that's just slightly above your budget. I urge you to look into it as I got the 1080p version of this for my parents.

http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/...ns/m/36197864/

If you're gonna watch a lot of television programs in HD then 720p/1080i is the best quality offered anyway, plus Blu-rays look good in 1080i. That's how I've been watching them for the last 7 months and they still look spectacular.

P.S: It's one of the few LCD TV's out there on which standard def television programming looks good.

plasma is better at the moment, but you're gonna pay out the nose to get better. bang for the buck is for sure lcd. with the prices as low as they are with the 46inch sharp at sears and circuit city (sears might be a 42, i can't remember) there's really no reason to get anything but a 1080p lcd

Don't listen to people telling you to get several credit cards. If you can afford the $1300 for the sharp get it, if you can't get the panasonic I listed for $900. Though then you are getting close to the 42" 1080p panasonic plasma.
