Default Plasma vs. 4k - Picking my new TV

Looking to get a new television for my bedroom. It will be for watching Blu-ray movies and for playing games on my PS4/Xbox One. My criteria is 54+ inches, 120 or more refresh rate, 3D, 4+ HDMI ports, Smart TV isn't a must have but it wouldn't hurt, and I'm looking at a price range of $1,400 - $2,000. Might even go over a little bit. Here are the two choices I have narrowed down but open to suggestions.

Samsung PN59D7000 59" Class 3D Plasma HDTV 1080p - 600 Hz - 4 HDMI inputs [2011 MODEL]

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A33ZFW15ZO0RKP

or

LG Electronics 55UB8500 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD 120Hz 3D Smart LED TV

http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics.../dp/B00II6VY6C

I would also like to know if I should also purchase the SquareTrade warranty for either of them?

Samsung (and a plasma of course) all the way. Also, I would get the warranty from Samsung as well.

A warranty through Samsung or the SquareTrade warranty?

Not a mistake. Square Trade covers beyond the first warranty. A Three-year SquareTrade warranty covers the two years after your one-year warranty with Best Buy. The 4-year version covers you 3 years beyond it.

With a Plasma you should have all the coverage you can afford.
I'm so glad I have my 3-year contract.
I love my Samsung Plasma. I bought it for my retirement with the last money I could spare.
Now it has a picture problem and it's only a year and half old.

For sets over 37-inches they send a tech to your home to fix it there. You pay nothing.
I have a tech coming this Wednesday.

The Square Trade tech told me that having a Plasma is like owning a Porsche. It's a great car, but it can be high maintenance. It's better to expect something will go wrong than to gamble on it working perfectly for years.
You should check for the small details in the contract, but for one thing, if they can't fix it, they will give you the money it cost for the set and you can buy any other TV you want with it.

You have 30 days after your purchase in which to get a Fair Trade contract.

Another vote for the plasma, 4k isn't worth it yet and the money you will save buying a 1080p plasma at the moment you will be more then the lower cost of a more matured 4k tech in a year or two.

Well, I'll have to think about this. I do want it to be protected, but my Best Buy warranty is for two years and already cost $200. Their 3 year plan is $159 and 4 year is $199. Are you sure there is a way for this to kick in after my other warranty runs out, so that it's like having 5 or 6 years of protection? I don't want to buy a second warranty only to have the time frame that it's good for be 1/2 way or 2/3 of the way sed up (depending on if I pick the 4 or 3 year plan) while my Best Buy warranty is in effect.

There's only a $100 difference between prices so I'm not hung up on that. The thing that gets me is that plasma is a 2011 model so it is almost 4 years old now. It's listed as new, not opened but is old.

You should look into the sony KDL 65w850a it's around your price range it's a led but this tv is remarkable it has deep blacks just as a plasma does and the PQ is incredible give it a look up I own this tv and it's probably one of the best tv on the market just as good as most 4k TVs out at the moment

I had always heard they were bad and a waste of money. Last month my 60vt60 went out from a surge, best buy was able to fix it in my home in 8 days.

Sounds like money well spent to me, then. The 8 day wait kind of sucks, but if they got it up and running again, then that's a good thing!

I was worried they wouldn't be able to fix it, and/or they would have to take it away and it probably would get scratched in the process.

I called the day it happened and they came the next day and looked to see what was wrong with it, they ordered a part that took a week to get here and in about 20 minutes they had it working again.

I would get one from them again for my next tv, assuming it's the same quality as a vt60. I know people have had bad experiences, but thats just mine with a recent high end plasma.

I shouldn't have said 'beyond' the other warranty. SquareTrade warranties all start at the date of purchase. My 3-year plan is 2 years beyond the Samsung coverage. You're better off to stick with Best Buy and consider adding to that. It just isn't safe to assume that nothing will happen after the first year, especially with Plasmas.

My warranty is good for 2 years. Also, while it would suck spending a lot of money on a repair if something does happen after the two year mark, my concern is less so the money and more so the availability of parts for these plasmas that are being discontinued. If the parts end up not being available, then we are screwed either way. A warranty won't make unavailable parts magically appear.

Extended warranties is what they call "Cheese" in the industry.

Default Help me decide on my new TV

Extended warranties are a waste of money usually. The $99 SquareTrade/Costco 5 year warranty is a notable exception. And contrary to previous comment, plasmas are not more prone to service issues than any other TV.

Virtually any plasma will provide better picture quality than virtually any LCD (save FALD), assuming you aren't in a very bright room, but for frequent gaming I'd recommend you go with a nice LED. Skip the 4k & curved gimmicks. I'd skip the smart features as well & just get a Roku instead.
