I dont like this. I will not buy such device. Blu-Ray only for me - clean and not bloated with anything useless...

I would like such device only if HD DVD brings 45GB online and actually use them wich will not hapen but i had to say it...

Typical narrow minded, fanboy response as I would expect from you.

Still posting this FUD and misinformation? Any links and references to back it up?

I welcome and embrace devices like these so the customer has maximum options and maximum choice.

The fact that Pioneer, a loyal BDA company since day one, would be putting out a product like this has to send everyone a message. I certainly get a message from it. YMMV.

Among other things, the clear message being: Both formats are going to be around for a while.

If we're going to be stuck with a silly format war environment for a while, then any way to get past it and around it is good as far as I'm concerned.

I think we may be stuck with a glorifed SACD vs. DVD-A situation for a while, whether any of us likes it or not. If that's the case, then the sooner we can get some kind of dual deck/universal solution out there...the better.

If I saw a Pioneer Elite Universal player ever show up, I'd buy that so fast it would make your head spin.

Ditto on your fanboyish response. I agree with Dave that I'm not much of a fan of a Universal player, since in my mind it will just cause consumer confusion. Much like the +/- issue we currently have now.

I'm not so sure why this is labeled as misinformation from you. Do you have any links and reference to back up any kind of inkling or presence of 45GB HD DVDs considering that they aren't even in the HD DVD spec? Nuff said.

To much choice causes confusion, IMO, this will inevitably cause confusion. Thus why you had advocates, from the very, very beginning calling for ONE unified format. Makes sense to me, and again, IMO, makes more sense for the HD market in general.

Good for you, but who here really cares what you buy? Moreover, why would it make anyone's head spin? If you want to buy it, go for it, but leave the head spinning drama for some other forum.

Ah, the Blu-Ray zealot police strikes again.

Please stop approaching me like this, just about every time I post.

Cease and desist.

I think you need to add me to your ignore list because this simply CANNOT and WILL NOT continue between you and me.

STOP.

While I agree that a dual format player aids in prolonging the format war and confusing consumers, I must applaud Pioneer for their decision to make a dual format drive. Pioneer did not start this format war but like any good business they have made the decision to have their product appeal to as many consumers as possible. I'm not particularily interested in a burner but if Pioneer decides to put out a standalone dual format player I'll be more than happy to purchase one. This is good news for HD DVD fans because it adds a big name to their side. That said, it's also good news for the many of us who will likely be supporting both formats. Yes it sucks we've got two formats but we might as well make the best of it. Pioneer has given some of us a solution.

I won't even get that excited and ahead of myself on it.

All I see here, at face value is a major BDA supporter saying: "Hey, I see two viable formats, I'm gonna try and make some money, throw something at the wall, and see what sticks."

It does have some rather intruiging ramifications, though.

It certainly tells me that even THEY don't expect HD-DVD to just disappear, poof, anytime real soon.

These are interesting times we live in...

Hey folks we need to be thinking outside of the box.

Pioneer could be looking at the potentially lucrative HTPC market. I'd love to have a single drive that plays back the most popular formats. Easier setup and power requirements not to mention driver simplicity.

I'm proud of Pioneer for making this step. This adds credence to the possibility of Universal players far more than say LG or Samsung announcing.

I think it's BS and redundant that we have to buy two players, or one player that plays a technically lesser format.

That said, I'd buy one!

Well technically Blu-ray is a better format but in reality it's not. Do we really need to get into that argument in yet another thread? This is a good thing for anyone who hasn't bought into either format yet... i.e. the 99.9% of consumers out there.

not trying to start an argument, just wishing the companies could of got together and just released one uber format is all, something I think we all wish would have happened.

But like I said...regardless, i'd buy a dual format player.

Anyone else starting to get the idea that, at least for a while, we're probably looking at SACD vs. DVD-A II, albeit on a larger scale?

I'm starting to.

For awhile it'll be like SACD vs DVD-A but I firmly believe one or both of the HD disc formats will thrive. Movies benefit a lot more from the better PQ while music in 5.1 just doesn't get the attention of most people.

Yup.

For the record: I adore SACD and DVD-A.

hmm the funny part is that the source of the article says NOTHING about the HD-DVD... chances are they misinterpreted what Pioneer said and they erased the HD-DVD mentions to not spread the vaporware, the possibility of a dual format writer is not equal to the announcement of a dual format writer, so you people better not hold your breath waiting for it.

About a possible dual format writer, it may be nice for the HTPC dudes but most will not benefit from it, first because the dirve will cost more and secondly cause the HD-DVD media costs around the same the BD media while the Blu-ray discs offer almost twice the space.
