Default Could writer's strike help Blu-ray?

With the writer's strike hitting television hard, maybe people will focus more on home video, then exploring better options than DVD. I don't think the strike will last long enough to affect Blu-ray in a negative way. What do you all think?

It only helps the writers to get royalties. Unless of course you are a huge fan of game shows, reruns, and reality shows.

I couldn't in the vaguest of manners figure how this would help Blu-Ray.

I really hate reality tv!!! But **** the producers. Give the writers what they want. They're not asking much.

The Writers are actually being a bunch of *******s. According to Hollywood insiders, the lowest paid Writer in the WGA makes upwards of $90k A year, and because of their strike, hundreds of Production workers have lost their jobs, or have atleast been laid off, the people that make around $30k-$45k a year. I agree the Writers deserve some money out of digital distribution, but not as much as they want. And also...who Unionized the writers all those many years ago? What's the point?

I am meaning right now, with tv shows almost all going to re-runs, will people look toward home video and Blu-Ray more. Not will the outcome of the writers' strike help, just the strike itself. I could've swore I outlined that in my original post....yes I did, sorry I couldn't make it any clearer. Geez.

To put it in more than vague ways....My favorite tv show "The Office" is now showing re-runs. I don't want to watch re-runs, so instead of that normal Thursday night of watching The Office, maybe I go out and buy Live Free or Die Hard on Blu-ray and watch it. Pretty simple reasoning if you ask me.

Another example. J6P realizes all his tv shows are now re-runs, so he thinks to himself "well I might as well go get some movies" He goes out and is more observant of the home video section at his local wal-mart, sees the HD-DVD/Blu-ray endcaps, and asks about it. What better time for someone to jump into the new technology than when tv shows are hurting, because you have to find something else to do with your time. Once again, pretty simple reasoning.

Alright, so the writers make 90k a year, that's a lot. But it's chump change compared to what these producers make (millions). So who's the real *******s??? On top of that, that quote about the money only refers to the working writers. What about the writers between jobs.

If the producers would stop being so selfish. We could all get on with our lives.

I see the point; however, I do support the writers, up to the point where their pursuit of own goals doesn't hurt the other employees in the industry past a point of basic solidarity. (And no, I can't reconcile the conundrum.)

I'm a writer too, and enjoy my royalty payments when the work I do sells well. So I hope that the studios realise that what they're being asked for is not unreasonable. And then the question will be a happier one -- not what the writers' strike can do for Blu-ray, but what Blu-ray can do for the wellbeing of the writers.

As far as more people watching movies than TV, I can't say for sure. It will probably spike rentals up a bit at least. It probably won't sway the ratio of Blu-ray to HD-DVD player or media sales much, though.

Along that line, however, I read in the paper that a writers strike should effect the box office in about 2-3 years, which means it'll effect home video about 6 months to a year beyond that. Reason being that it takes about 2-3 years to turn a script into a motion picture and 6 months to a year for a motion picture to go from big screen to home video.

If the format war isn't over 2.5+ years from now, then it probably won't ever be over, lol.
