Default A drawback? (PS3 may not play certain PS1/PS2/DVD discs)

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/about.html

The above link mentions that the ps3 may not be able to play certain ps1, ps2, and DVD movies. This is something that hovered over the ps2, mainly both models and while I wouldn't be mad at Sony because a few games don't work, it's something to think about. I was thinking that by now, we could avoid an issue like this. Maybe not.

Name a PSone game that does not work on PS2. You can't. That means that the very few games that don't work, probably no one cares about.

Ps3 is going to have the PS2 hardware included. So for the very least previous Playstation games will be as if played on PS2. Of course they could use cell to improve graphics.

I beleive that hardware based compatibility is the best solution because you get %100 compatibility. The manufacturing price will be really high to include all the hardware from the PS2 on a PS3. But evenutaly maufacturing will be set to full masproduction with higher yeilds and lower costs. They will end up paying more for man hours and software development which must be developed fo each individual game if thet did Software based like MSFT. Thats a lot of money.

that's why MSFT's 360 will never have 100% backwards compatibility. Only the few more popular games will be supported.

Is backwards compatibility nessesary? No, people buy new cosnoles to play new games. However it looks good on paper, and it pushes people over the fence to get the new console knowing they can fully replace their old console.

right now I am into Legend of Legaia. This classic PSone RPG runs flawless on PS2 and I can add smoothing to the textures to make it's look somewhat better.

I like backwards compatibility, i play old games a lot.

Sony hasn't mentioned about any ps1 or ps2 game that won't work on the ps3.
