Warner Bros The Omega Man (1971)

I'd like to use this thread to discuss the release of The Omega Man on BD by WB. Has anyone received their copy and can comment on the quality?

It isn't formally available until tomorrow. But since I always do free shipping with amazon, my copy probably won't ship until much later this week; and I'll be lucky to get it early next week.

I do have another Warner's release from that film era (the 60's), Battle of the Bulge, and it's just fine, PQ wise.

I got my copy of The Omega Man in the mail today. It comes with a $7.00 off coupon to I Am Legend. It expires December, 29, 2007.

Without being a reviewer and not having the best setup, I am only providing a broad overview of the film. The film itself is a bit grainy and noisy. I picture it as black pixels moving all over the place. The colors are vibrant and I feel this is probably the best we are going to get from this old flick. For some reason, and it may be my setup, there seems to be an overall brightness to the film. I notice that the left and right side of the video contains a certain "white" overlay to it.The audio is a little disappointing being that it is DD 1.0. I have to turn my Bravia KDL-52W3000 up to at least 30 to clearly hear dialog. The extras were ported over from the DVD release. Overall, without doing a side by side comparison of the DVD version that I own, I am glad that I purchased this BD version. If you are a fan it is worth the upgrade.

EDIT: I believe the whiteness is due to the way my picture is currently configured.

Default Omega Man not available at Netflix

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up on this, but Netflix won't be carrying the Omega Man until there is a demand for it. Anyone interested in renting this should contact Netflix to have them carry it.

I love The Omega Man so much. Such a classic movie. One of the best sci-fi movies of it's time/decade, and call me crazy but when I was watching it again the other day I couldn't help but find it similar in many different ways to The Strain currently on FX

An all-time favorite of mine as well! APES, SOYLENT GREEN, and OMEGA MAN are a sci-fi trifecta of awesome.

I saw Soylent Green for the first time earlier this year. While needless to say the surprise ending was ruined for me years ago by pop culture, I loved it, especially the world building. Will definitely be getting that one when I can, too.

I found the The Omega Man, Logan's Run, Soylent Green triple feature set for $10 several years ago. Love all three of these.

I avoided the movie for a long time because I thought that knowing the ending would ruin the movie. But I was so wrong. After seeing it for a couple of times it's easily become one of my all-time favourite movies! The atmosphere through the movie is great and I almost feel like I have to hold my breath to avoid inhaling the pollution. The 3/5 rating on this site is something I can't understand.

I'd say Omega is by far the lesser of the three, but yes I love them all. 70's sci-fi was often so great and profound, very little like it made afterward.

These are all great 70's sci-fi, along with WestWorld.

I need to rewatch Omega Man. I've always enjoyed it. I remember first seeing it as a kid in the 1980s. One of my friends brought it over on VHS and basically made me watch it. I was blown away. I remember the scenes of Heston driving around a desolate NY really stuck with me.

It's LA, actually.

I think I've told this story before. The kids next door and I were standing out by the mailboxes in our suburban neighborhood, when some other kids walked by putting flyers in the mailboxes for a new movie opening at the local Laurel MD theater. I don't remember that kind of promotion before or after.

Anyway, I saw it during its first run as a 13-year-old, was completely infatuated with the movie, and have been ever since.

I wish they would remaster this movie with a new version. I enjoyed it quite heavily, but the quality of the BD was so bad that I eventually just had the need to get rid of it.

What's so horrendous about it? I mean, it's not going to win any awards or anything, but it's not anywhere near being so bad it's not worth owning, if you like the film. Why did you feel you needed to get rid of it?

Yes, exactly, I'm wondering if he's getting it mixed up with something else, as it looks very decent.

I know The Omega Man is an older transfer/encode and has a lossy soundtrack so the chances for improvement are technically there, but this one still looks damn good to me. Still love the movie, that score in particular. Although I still don't believe Matheson's I Am Legend has been done real justice on film, this attempt remains my favorite; sorry, Vincent and Will...

Actually, didn't this film feature the first interracial kiss? And didn't Star Trek do the same on TV? Funny how it took Sci-Fi to break down those barriers.
