Default Blu-ray has won

http://www.techworld.com/storage/blo...=3&entryid=712
Quote:
Blu-ray has won." It's as simple as that. This was the message coming from Richard George, the technical director of Westpoint, a supplier of JVC-built Blu-ray optical juke boxes.

The desktop box can have four magazines each with 50 Blu-ray disk slots - the drives are naked, not enclosed in cartridges - and up to six drives. Each disk is 2-layer and holds 50GB, so the box can hold up to 10TB. In terms of archive storage capacity per square foot this is pretty good. A taller box has 600 slots and we're looking at 30TB in one rack unit.
A 200-slotter with six drives will cost £15,000 - 20,000. It depends upon the software and the precise configuration. Westpoint is selling the things into the traditional medical image and document management markets. It hasn't gone into enterprise archiving as has Plasmon.
Anyway, back to Blu-ray. New figures show:-
- 73 percent of high-definition movie disks bought in Europe this year were in Blu-ray format, with 27 percent being HD-DVD. The numbers come from Media Control Gfk International.
- Equivalent figures for the USA from Home Media Research showed Blu-ray titles outselling HD-DVD by nearly two to one in the USA.
It's probable that Sony's Blu-ray-using PlayStation has resulting in over 20 million Blu-ray disk sales in Europe with high-definition movie sales contributing a million plus as well.
It could be that the tide is turning in Blu-ray's favour. George says that CDs and DVDs can be read by Westpoint's Blu-ray jukebox providing better backwards compatibility than HD-DVD.
But that doesn't mean Toshiba will give up with HD-DVD.

a fact already is known. A FACT HDDVD GROUP CONTINUES TO IGNORE. Let them continue on wasting money and time on a dying format known as HDDVD.

I feel bad for all those that bought hddvd because it was the cheapest option and those that became fanboys because of that and the xbox addon. It's like they are waiting for something to buy while blu-ray owners actually buy more movies, manufacturers make more players and devices and drives and laptops and pc's, etc. Bribing paramount failed. $99 player Friday failed. Black Friday: failed. Just give up Toshiba and join the blu!

HD DVD ignorance will be punished by death and huge loss. They should surrender now ... actually why should we care about them?

At what point will the board at Toshiba Japan tell Toshiba USA the war is over?

Well being that they have not called it over in Japan even with it being over 90% Blu over there. Perhaps they have refugee board members from Enron? All smoke and mirrors!

This is awesome, put up your white flags HD fanboys your done, threw, over, finished, make toshibas head quarters a parking lot. HD DUD has fallen while Blu ray keeps exceeding. All of us knew it and we told you all along but this is nice. All we can do know is keep buying blus and watching each blow (release) pummel dud to the ground.

i don't know anything about upscaling players, but I know it says 1080p on the boxes of them. And the $98 player was 1080i right? So it costs more than double that of a upscaling player and it's worse? Plus if they bought any hddvd movies they're pretty useless.

If BD lost we wouldn't have lost much. We can keep all of our movies since there quality would be better than anything hddud could ever put out.

It's the ones who recently got on, paid $199, $299 or more for these players that would experience some pain.

I still have about 35 hd dvd disks left after I started trying to sell off my 50 red disk collection, so it's not painless for me, but the good thing is that with a 360 addon, the main features can be transferred onto BD-RE if you know how to convert the EAC3(DD+) to PCM or to AC3/DTS. The players should still work for many years, and there'll be an opportunity to pick a HD-A3 up cheap in the next clearance sale if you need a backup player.

But it is still too early to say bd has completely won, though it has a numerical advantage now. If Bourne week passes and BD still sells more disks, then it means that every week in the entire year in 2007 is painted blu, often by 2:1 margins or more. That's an important point that cannot be lost on those who are looking down the readat the eventual outcome.
And the studios backing that format have just as much to answer for if not more than Toshiba.

I think we should begin starting a new culture on these boards...

I don't know why we are so concerned with what HD-DVD is doing...they are only being kept alive due to contract obligations ala Universal etc...

my whole attitude from now on towards anything that is about HD-DVD on these forums....or comparing Blu to HD-DVD is.."so?"...

they are only alive because they won't give up and they are past the point of no return...

if it hasn't gotten bad enough yet....just wait until 2008 when we start realizing all the sales from the new PS3 owners....

it's unreal how quickly I've seen 360 fanboys (who used to support PS2 only) have come back to the PS3 and don't even give the 360 another look now...

and these are people who buy BD's here and there...

even a BD here and there for the non-Blu dedicated PS3 owners is enough to smash them and it's not even a war anymore...

our new goal is how long before we can be considered on par with DVD?

and in that battle...we are like HD-DVD compared to DVD in regards to sales....

people that say they don't care about high def just simply think it's too expensive....I know people that said they didn't care about high def a year ago and now own 2 HD sets.....and a PS3....hell, I talked my mom into a PS3 the other day because of the wifi capabilities and all that stuff instead of buying a new computer...

I really don't know why we are concerned with HD-DVD.....with their firesale around black friday, that was their shot to make some ground and they just simply had one of their worst weeks...

...period....and sorry for the rant...but the culture here has to change I think...and the only people that should be concerned are the ones spreading FUD, hoping there are a few Blu crackheads and try to sway them to jump ship...

but I think even a crackhead knows better...

yeah....we'd make a small step from DVD instead of moving into the future...

if we didn't move towards BD now, MS would just try to do it in 7 years because their method is to milk the system.....of course they are a US based company and that's the way it is over here....

make slow strides because people will buy the latest thing anyways...

exactly...every shot...and last ditch effort the red camp has made in this critical year of HD formats has been smashed and considered useless...

any company that might jump ship because of payment...would have done so already...and there is no incentive to jump...

Yeah,

Blu Ray won. HD DUD lost. I've known this since I bought my PS3 more then a year ago.

There's only one catch. People who buy into HD DUD can't stop believing in it. They simply refuse to stop believing in it. You can show them sales numbers but if they understood numbers they would have known from the start 50GB>30GB. You can mention Disney but they hope Disney will change thier mind any minute now and jump onto the sinking ship. Doesn't really matter what you do those people can be as thick as a brick.

Soon,.. DUD's will only be available through the mail and while it will take them a while to go away at least we won't have to see them in the stores.

I have wasted more than $100 on more stupid things. I wouldn't worry either. Anyone who spent more, like $500 or more in the early stages will be so pissed.

I could see that I guess. But,.. Blu Ray players make great upcscaling DVD players too. The PS3 does it all for me, no need for extra hardware.

If any HD DUDers can be brought to thier senses they will dump all the HD DUD stuff onto Ebay and use whatever they make to buy into the format with the future.
