Default F5300 Gaming Troubles

I just got the 51 inch F5300 plasma television. So far I've been very pleased with its handling of filmed content but have been having trouble with its handling of games on my PS3.

I don't know what exactly I'm seeing but the motion in games is very inconsistent and the image becomes riddled with rainbow hues. In Batman Arkham Asylum this affected bright spots in the dark environment, especially shades of red or orange and in Bioshock Infinite the whole environment was basically a problem.

I haven't done very much to the settings beyond changing the picture setting to Movie mode and setting the color tone to Cool. Any help to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Set the color tone to warm 1 or warm 2 to start with. I've been gaming on my 60F5300 with no issues at all like you've described. What are your settings?

It sounds more like a problem with compression or artifacts in the game itself. Do they show up on other televisions? What size was your previous set? Larger sets are going to show off flaws in content, especially if you sit close.

This won't fix whatever issue you're having, but it will make your plasma look better (to get it crazy good you'd need to mess with all those complicated calibration settings).

Set color space to native
HDMI black level to low
Color tone to warm 1 or 2
Turn off the black optimizer

I game on plasma all the time (Skyrim and GTA). Anytime something odd is visible...it isn't the plasma that is the problem.

Oddly enough, those changes to the settings actually helped and my games are running much better now. I'm still noticing some rainbow effect in certain places during movement, but its far less than what I was seeing before and may simply be a reality of the technology (I read that its an optical effect caused by the way your eyes move across the screen). So, thank you.

What I'm interested in now is how to watch films in different aspect ratios while managing image retention. I've used the scrolling pattern to wipe away some images that have stuck around (most recently a tv channel logo in the bottom right corner) and am a bit concerned. I've read a lot about the notion of "breaking in" a plasma television and how for the first 100+ hours of viewing you should stick to full frame content. To that end, I've been exclusively watching films and television at 1.85 and 1.75 aspect ratios. At what point should I feel comfortable trying other aspect ratios?

I would run the TV continuously, while in bed or at work, with a dvd set on repeat of a chapter.

Do this for 3-4 days...and all your future IR issues are behind you.

Breaking in is a myth and is only for those who are going to get their set professionally calibrated. They use break-in slides so the panel ages evenly. IR doesn't get better the more hours you put on the set. Best thing to get rid of IR is just to watch bright full screen content or the pixel flipper on the Disney Wow disc. Don't worry, just enjoy your television.

and dont' leave the same image up for 10+ hours with nothing changed. Break in during the first 100 hours or so I doubt is a myth otherwise the manufacturers wouldn't have warned about it.

Manufacturers don't warn about it, at least not anymore.

It's just common sense not to leave a static image on the screen for 10+ hours. LCD's have been known to have burn-in as well and likely will if a static image is left for a couple of days. Image retention at 2 hours of the panels life and 102 hours is no different and it's not going to be better or worse.

The last of the samsung and panasonic plsmas did. My point it with an lcd a static image like a game hud will start to have some ir if you play that for 10 hours with no other content in between (it doesn't even have to be in one sitting). All techs bar dlp have the possibility of IR and burn in. LCD is just notably less likely and typically far harder to do it with.

If you're playing a video game for 10 hours straight with no breaks, then there are far worse problems you need to remedy.

Reread my post. It doesn't have to be in one sitting.

Alright, while watching foreign language films I'm seeing image retention from the subtitles which is something I wasn't expecting to have to worry about.

They should go away within a few minutes of full screen content. Likely a 2.35:1 movie, right?

No, it was 1.78. It looked like the subtitles were leaving a cumulative after-image as the movie itself was playing. It was animated and I don't know if that makes any difference with how susceptible it would be to image retention. I ran the scrolling pattern for a while and it seems to have mostly faded away. I'm a little worried now, though, as a lot of what I watch is subtitled.

How many hours do you have on your plasma?

It'll be two weeks old on Saturday. I can't give an exact count for hours of use but I'd say its at least 80 hours if not more.

The television is specifically the PN51F5300B.
