Default Great Idea for BD marketing.

Bring in your old A-2 plus 150 dollars or an A-3 plus 100 dollars and get a BD player from the price of 399$ or less. heh I think this would help bring HD DVD owners to see the (Blu)light.

(HD DVD could do it to i guess: Bring your BD player in and we will give you an A3 plus 300 dollars)

why would the owners of older technology have to pay less??? The A3 is the newest generation HD-DVD player, the A2 is the discontinued one.

Neat idea, but Sony doesn't need to do anything like that.

^ I know, BD is gonna take the win anyways, but still it'd be nice to throw those HD DVD owners a bone.

Or...
You could buy the new panasonic for ~ $420 and toss the Toshiba in the land fill

The question would be then, "What would the BDA do with all these useless HD-DVD players?"

Seriously though, this is the kind of settlement I'd like to see: Toshiba starts making dual-format players and stops production of HD-DVD-only players. There's a special discount for upgraders (bring in your old unit) of the A1, A2 etc to the new Toshiba dual player.

Here's the kicker, the special discount is partly funded by a waiving of the usual hardware licencing fees for Blu-ray. The waiver would apply by rebate only to the upgrades which have removed dedicated HD-DVD players from circulation. Blu-ray hardware manufacturers would have to agree on this as a special and very temporary concession to Toshiba which would help smooth out the ending of the format war. The HD-DVD-heads could then play their existing disc libraries and (if the upgrade price is right) couldn't really whine too much about the demise of their format.

The war could in effect be concluded on the hardware side of things if nobody is making HD-DVD-only players anymore and there's a smooth transition to Blu for the sticklers.

I did mention the trade-in option a few times on this forum.

This was done by Commodore back in the 80s and it was meant to dry up the hardware so there would be less software demand for that specific hardware.

I love the idea of Toshiba slowly phasing out HD-DVD players by making dual format machines. Trade ins would be tough though since there are over 750,000 HD-DVD players in the wild. Thats a lot of trade-ins. It would be great if they did do a trade in program because it would soften the blow a little bit. I doubt it would happen though.
