Default Sony Speaks About Blu-Ray Encoding

Impress had a great article about their encoding process, specifically in regards to the upcoming Ghost in the Shell 2 release. They did some side by side comparisons between the master and MPEG-2 VBR at 35Mbps. Not surprisingly, you couldn't tell the difference. Check out the link (which I have thrown through a translator) to check out the info.

Oh noes! MPEG2 = teh suxxoresz!!

See? You won't have to put up with that kind of ignorant BS here.

Exactly right: AS EXPECTED, no differences.

Key word yet again: Implementation.

Q, you're starting to scare me with your HD DVD fanboy interpretations.

Lesson learned... i.e. I agree.

Someone mentioned at AVS that there's a new Yahoo article which states that Sony is working on their own version of AVC (MPEG4).

Gotta find a link.

Wouldn't suprise me at all though i'm kind shocked that they don't take advantage of having apple in the BDA and use their codec which looks very good I haven't seen too many bad quicktime Trailers and I've hooked it up to a projector to make sure its not just my laptop screen. Apple done the research and woudl love to get just 1 disc format so they can introduce soem new desktops with blu-ray burners.

It's an interesting article in general but I'm glad they talked about the high bitrate for it, topping out around 37.5 I believe. In combination with the audio tracks and the numerous subtitle tracks for this "internatioanl edition" release, it's the one that I have the most hopes for this year.

What really sucks is that both Japan and UK have announced anime on BD but no US companies have yet. I suspect Sony will get Metropolis listed sometime soon and next year we'll see at least Tokyo Godfathers from them to tentpole Paprika when it comes out.

Cowboy Bebop would be another good one since they have shown that on Starz HD I think.

Kind of a dodgy translation...I mean lines such as:

"Main screen turn on 1080p"
"HD DVD on the way to destruction, make your time"
"All your codec are belong to us"
"Go PS3! For great justice"

You do realize that it was translated by Google's site, right?

Hopefully, the Japanese version will include the English dub. Since we are in the same region code, we could just get the Japanese version!

Unfortunately, it won't have the English dub. The disc is basically replicating the International Edition that they released within the last year or so on DVD which had the second disc of extras (which are all on this one BD-50). It has the multiple subtitles, including English, but no multiple languages. I've had the specs page translated and the details are here:

Watching Anime with English dubs is so uncool anyway. Japanese with English subs.

I'm hoping though for ROD TV being on Blu-ray.

I'm watching it right now on Animax-Asia and it's an awesome series so far. And the official English dub (from New Generation Pictures) was done really well.

Definitely deserves to be on Blu-ray. Definitely deserves to be on Hi-Def.

ROD wouldn't get that much of an upgrade unfortunately since it's 4:3 material. The higher bitrate would definitely help and I'd love a higher end audio track on it though.

Eww... just read the subs. Dubbing movies should be banned.

Smile Sony latest on MPEG-2

Hello Gang ! We do not need to be rocket scientists to figure out that movies encoded using MPEG-2 at 37.5 Mbit/s will be very close to D5 master quality. It has been demonstrated years ago and reported in various technical publications. The real questions are - other things being equal - 1) what is the minimum bit rate for MPEG-2 to match the D5 master quality and 2) what is this number for VC-1 and AVC/H.264. The very independent European Broadcasting Unit ( EBU ) thinks that AVC/H.264 is twice more efficient than MPEG-2 based on hundreds of tests and VC-1 is about the same efficiency as AVC/H.264 but simplier in its implementation. Bottom-line : Sony went wrong on its choice of MPEG-2 for various reasons ( one being overly conservative ) : they picked a 15-year old compression technology which simply cannot work as well as the recent ones unless you use very high bit rates which makes the choice of codecs irrelevant. Plus there are inherent flaws in MPEG-2 which have been corrected in the recent codecs because of all the advances made in computational speed and capacity of the chipsets. It is interesting to note the comment from the Sony guy in the article who said that AVC/H 264 is new ( and therefore not ready to be used ). Well, this is exactly what Fox and Disney have done for their coming BD releases and the first reviews posted on this forum indicate that the images using AVC/H.264 are fantastic. Humm, I feel that it is a matter of days before Sony "re-allocate" out some of its people who picked MPEG-2 and a matter of months before it moves everything to AVC/H.264 for both 25 GB and 50 GB BRD.

Yeah anime with subs is the way to go not dubs. I hate watching most anime with dubs simply because generally its sooo damn bad and half the time the meanings are completely screwed up when they translate. I speak enough Japanese to understand intent when speaking and so a lot of times i notice it right away and just crack up.
