Default Best satellite speaker wiring?

We are putting an additional room on our house currently that will eventually be our TV/entertainment room. We have a 50" Samsung 1080p plasma that will be attached into a built in entertainment center. I also have an Sony surround sound system with five small satellite speakers. We plan on attaching 4 of the speakers to the upper four corners of the room and having the 5th either attached to the ceiling above the TV or on one of the upper shelves to the entertainment center. My question is what kind of wiring should I get for the speakers? I want the speakers to be wired into the wall before the walls are sealed up, so need to make a decision soon. My Sony system is older...I have had it for about 6-7 years. Any advice on this would be appreciated! Thanks.

shielded wire & leave at lease 15 ft extra wire, so if you ever want to move the speakers you don't have to tair out the wall.

Use 12 gauge speaker wire that you can either buy at Home Depot or Lowes or on-line at Monoprice.com. At Home Depot or Lowes you can get this cut to length off a spool.

You can use smaller gauge wire such as 14 or 16, but I would recommend going with the 12.

Any other comments on what I should do? If not, then I guess I will start looking for some 12 gauge wire. The current wire that I have is the original that came with the speakers. What gauge usually comes with surround sound systems?

Throw it out.

The stuff that comes in the box is usually 18 gauge and extremely cheap.

Let me see if I can find a link to the monoprice.com stuff.....back in a minute.....

Here you go:

One is "in-wall", one is not.....personally I don't think it makes a difference except that the in-wall has a protective outer jacket....

If you put your speakers where you plan to, you'll have bigger problems that what cable you use! Corners are about the worst possible place you can put speakers, so I'd re-think their placement before worrying about cable!

Thanks for the info....maybe I should look into getting some in-wall speakers that are a little better quality. I would still use the Sony receiver I have, but it may be nice not to have speakers sticking out of the walls since I will no longer be putting them in the corners.

I'm a little slow to the party, but I have to agree totally. 12 gauge shielded speaker wire is definitely the best way to go. It is surprising how often the quality of sound depends on the wire it travels down.

For in-wall, the shielded wire is even more important. Just running the wire past an in-wall power junction box can introduce a huge amount of audio interference in an un-shielded wire. Also, try to get 99% pure copper wire( both positive and negative sides). As I understand it, wire of this type offers the least resistance to the signal as it travels. Hence, better response from the speakers.

In ceiling speakers are good but not the best way to listen to your movies. There are a lot of good, in-ceiling options. Where I work, we sell an excellent series, but these pale by comparison to stand alone speakers. Sadly, there will always be a trade-off between desirable aesthetics for your room, and the best audio quality.

Good luck on whatever you decide!
