USA Them! (1954) - October 6, 2015

Coming separately and as a part of the Special Effects Collection (thread here).

Quote:
A horror horde of crawl-and-crush giants clawing out of the earth from mile-deep catacombs!

Man has split the atom and ushered in a new era. But how could he know he would also create Them?

Them! is a landmark movie about giant radiation-mutated ants that gets better with age and boasts remarkable, Academy Award®-nominated special effects. Starring James Whitmore, James Arness and Edmund Gwenn, Them! begins in New Mexico with a child wandering in shock, a ransacked general store - and a battered corpse full of enough formic acid to kill 20 men. It ends with an epic struggle in the 700 miles of storm drains under Los Angeles, where the insect hordes are beaten. But they're not conquered, because they spawned a generation of films about radioactive creatures. Some approximate the terror but few have equaled the artistry of Them!.

Never was a fan, but now that I've seen it a few times, it does seem to stand out as a B-movie classic that I feel compelled to buy. Will be a day-one purchase for me, why not?

Definitely getting this one. I always loved how it has more than one Wilhelm Scream.

Looks like I'm going to be getting the whole "Special Effects Collection" since the other movies look keen as well. Them! is my favorite of the bunch, though.

One of my faves growing up, and still love it. The use of sound for suspense (sort of like the music in JAWS) is great!

Good to see Warner putting out some deeper catalog titles. Cautiously optimistic.

This may be a day one purchase for me as well. I grew up watching a ton of 50's sci-fi B movies and this one always stood out to me.

I usually only collect sci-fi from the 60's up, but this is a cheese classic I might have to get. Prefer the individual packaging to the random collection, too.

It's funny but for some reason this one has always felt more 'modern' (and not necessarily in a good way) than other 50s sci-fi/horror fare. it's a great movie and I'll be snapping it up but even though it was a childhood staple it doesn't have the same kind of nostalgia vibe as say War of the Worlds or Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Godzilla or the like.

Still, huge news and long overdue.

Great news!!! Easily the best of the 50's "big bug" cycle.

This will be a day one for me...now if only I can decide, Boxed Set or Individual???

The Musical set and the 1939 set have both been Individual since I had some in Blu-ray already...but these I have none...

Sweet. This photo reminded me of Frank Zappa's song "Cheapness". No offense though.:

The DVD of Them! had terrific menus (which can be seen in the DVD Beaver review here), which will presumably be dumped in favor of the ugly generic symbol ones favored by WB (and Universal) for their BDs.
