I think 3 will never be topped, it had the most shocking deaths, the best pacing, and pretty much everyone had something to do. Probably the best redemption arch as well seen from Jamie, I don't think we were ever going to care for shame until that Season.

I found 5 pretty steady pacing-wise, after the fourth started slowly on most parts and stalled past the
[Show spoiler]Joffery death
. However, 4 delivered in it's final episodes more and more, while 5 stumbled a little more with it's bigger moments. Or course 5 has the most standout moment out of most, but it has a few too many awkward bits to fully take it.

My rankings go:

3
2
4
5
1

To me, the difference between Season 1 and Season 2 are night and day, Season 1 just feels and looks like an over blown TV show, while the second looks like a fantasy saga. None of them are bad, but the writing and sets on the first season just don't fit the bill.

For me it's a virtual tie between 2 and 3.

Two has the Blackwater episode and those great scenes between Tywin and Arya, plus the beautiful photography in Iceland and the beginning of Jon Snow's relationship with Ingrette.

Three has the Rains of Castemere, the great scenes between Jaime and Brienne, the climbing of the Wall and the introduction of Mance and the wildlings.

I almost think of seasons two and three as one long season.

Season 1 has been the best and it's slowly gone downhill from there.

I was thinking about this the other day and it's really hard to separate them because it feels like it is is just one over arching story, but the first season was probably the most focused, but I've loved them all.

1. 1
2. 2
3. 5
4. 3
5. 4

Maybe something like that, I'll have to watch them again.

Season 3 is when I finally got into it, and Season 4 was just amazing.

I have a hard time seeing how anyone can not vote season 1. From top to bottom it was the only flawless season with no bad episodes. While there have been great moments throughout the show, season 1 had something happen basically every episode. The reason we love some of the characters we do is because of season 1.

I would say 1, 3/2 (basic tie for me, but I think I prefer season 3 for the Red Wedding and Jaime's story), 5, and then 4.

Season 4 just dragged on too long with made up storylines that went nowhere (everything at Craster's, Tyrion rotting in prison, Sansa on a boat, Arya and Hound wandering aimlessly, Podrick and Brienne wandering aimlessly). It's the only season I have a hard time going back and watching because the middle portion is just a chore.

Season 5 is probably my favorite, maybe that's mostly because it's the latest one so it's freshest in my memory but still.

Definitely the first season. They stayed mostly true to the book series and it felt like a true adaption. I felt like it got lazier and more fan service-y in the later seasons.

The best episodes of seasons 2-4 are better than the best episodes of season 1 imo.

The stories get more expansive...the characters develop into more interesting versions of themselves.

Agree, but Season 2 and 4 have some annoying plot holes. Season 1 has the most consistent storytelling. (Season 3 comes close)

After a rewatch of all the seasons in lead up to season 6 I would now rank them as -

1. 4
2. 1
3. 2
4. 5
5. 3

I love them all though

Funny how the last time I ranked them season 4 was my least favourite but now I feel like its the most confident and well paced season.
