Default Not related to blu-ray....

i am just curious about something. I've had this tought in my mind for awhile and wanted to get your opinions.
Ever since LOTR came out, which to me is by far the most beautiful and complete movies EVER. It seems any other movie that comes out with somewhat similar enviroment, meaning medieval, sword fights like eragon, narnia, golden compass, etc. I have had ZERO interest because nothing will ever top what i saw at LOTR, i know its not to compare, but what can a movie show that hasnt yet been amazingly displayed before. Felt the same way about Kingdom of Heaven and Alexander (which sucked anyways).
So just curious to see if anyone has felt the need to reject any movies similar to LOTR.

Personally I agree with you somewhat on the fantasy side, but not on the historical side.

I have Kingdom of Heaven and Alexander on the same genre with Gladiator, Ben-Hur, Troy. Not with LOTR.

But, sheesh, there's no beating that Pelennor Fields battle.

I concur. LOTR is by far the best and most "complete" fantasy film as it is very faithful to the books. Narnia, Stardust, the golden compass and the likes are just a good time at the movies but nothing more. LOTR is a must have on Bluray IMO.

If you take what you consider to be one (or some) of the greatest movie(s) of all time, and constantly compare them to everything else, you'll never like anything again.

I try to stay away from doing that. I like to think of LotR as special. I know nothing will touch it, but I like enjoying the others for what they are.

Its like comic movies. Friends always try to compare them to the comic, and they will never be EXACTLY like the comic, and rarely better than the comic that they love so much. So just take it as a movie adaptation. An 'elseworlds' story, if you will.

All those movies you mentioned are targeted at kids and young teens. They are fantasy, but you really can't compare them to LOTR. There really haven't been any adult fantasy films to compare it to since the 70-80's. There was Willow, Conan, Dragonslayer, Time bandits, Beastmaster and a whole slew of others. Now if they were to make the original Shannara trilogy or the wheel of time series that would be more on the level with LOTR.

You have to take each thing for what it is, I think, would be the umm, main bullet point of this presentation.

Cant compare Omaha beach in Saving Private Ryan to Helm's Deep, or the dogfight in ID4 to the ones in say, Tuskegee Airmen.

I'll play devil's advocate and while I agree that the technical effects and the story were superior to other films--most of which were CGI eyecandy in search of a story--LotR was in fact quite flawed in some of the directing and acting. The beauty of the story was in the RELATIONSHIPS between the characters and this is where the films leave me flat. I was also disappointed in how, after being quite faithful to the books for nearly the entire trilogy, Jackson suddenly threw in his own version of what happened in Mt Doom before the ring was destroyed. That silly cliffhanger moment that wasn't in the book really cheapened the film. It was a big let-down for me. And with all the technically amazing elements of the production, some of the human elements were discarded.

But your point is well taken. The fact that finally a film came along where all the emphasis on CGI actually was required by the STORY was new, and studios have been trying to capitalize on LotR's success ever since.

The Harry Potter series is one good example of a comparable series that seems to stand on its own legs. Of course the story will never match what Tolkien wrote, but kids may relate better to HP than to hobbits.

I noticed you pointed out a few of the "newer" novels to take off. Were you aware that George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series has been optioned by HBO?

It'll be one of those shows that, like Rome, I'll have to purchase HBO for and then buy the series when it comes out. Here's to hoping that HBO will put something other than the Soprano's on blu.

That is, if Martin survives to write the books. At his pace, he'll end up the same as Robert Jordan, dead before the last one is written.

I didn't know that, but I did just find out that Warner Brothers optioned the rights to the Shannara books. If the movies are done well I think they could be better than LOTR.

They'd have to compete with LOTR now, it would be incredibly hard to do, and either succeed or fail miserably.

i reject LOTR now don't flame me but the movies were slow and boring yeah i agree the enviorments were good and it made me sit through all 3 of the movies but they were one of the most slow paced movie series i've ever seen
i prefer troy and narnia over LOTR although the storyline of narnia was bad but it was fast-paced and the enviorments were beautiful
Troy tops my list however of the midevil movies

I liked Peter Jackson when he did Dead alive and Bad taste. But he lost all ;originality in storytelling and style with Lotr. This is just moeny spread on the screen with bland characters fast movement for fights making it chaotic, and cheap CGI (the Whargs - big wolves, look like Super nontendo mobs).
Yes, as the characters were manichean, the story loses all appeal, mocking Gimli the dwarf is insulting (he's the wise guy).
Movies like Labyrinth and Krull are real better for me.

One of my main reasons for hoping Warner goes Blu is that shelf space I've reserved for "Excalibur"--
Old-skool-80's "real" epic, no CGI invented.
