I happen to agree with this guy.
If Studios think they will still see double digit market increases or increases at all, they are wrong. But if they want to maintain good sales, they better move to HD (Blu), and soon.

The time when you could greenlit a $150M certified failure (Sahara?) and count on DVD (/HD) sales to recup will draw to a close before 2010 imho.
This being said, Maybe the HD market will give a jolt to sales, who knows for certain?
In no way do I see downloadable content replacing physical medias for the next, say, 6-10 years. So we still need a good format (Blu Ray) for HD.

But HD DVRs and VoD through Satellite / Cable will certainly give a hard blow to sales.

So does his .. but as usual it's a proprietary one that only serves one company .. costs twice as much..while holding half the amount.. and splitting open 6 out of 10 times.

Unless of course people don't care about picture quality, but then why buy the Blu-ray player?

The article suggests that even with a single format, sales will decline from where they were in previous years. Part of the problem is that they keep inching the price upward past the hot sell through point. The BD BOGO type sales are helping now, but once those are gone, the current retail price of high def discs is too high for the mass market. Greed is going to backfire.

The studios will reach for a strategy that combines multiple revenue streams: Theater sales, HD Optical and other means of delivery. We are past the point of a single revenue stream. That's really the point.

Every other business has had to diversify their revenue streams, movie studios are no different. It's not doom and gloom for HDM, it's points to the fact that the studios have to sell through multiple channels.

Sounds like these pali guys are not your average research group. They were the ones that spilled the beans on paramount and the payoff. They do research and advising for big money like mutual funds, pension funds, and hedge funds. I think if they are calling the switch to blu it is for real.

The difference hear is that he's predicting a 2008 victory with Warner becoming Blu-ray exclusive very soon.

+1.

It's not just the outcome, but the mid 2008 statement.

You're going to see price reductions on media next year for sure. The average catalogtitle should hit the $19.99-$24.99 range, and the new releases should settle in the $29.99-$34.99 range, allowing for $22.99 and under discounting on them that people are used to paying.
