I saw this (Hawaii) on TV in the mid 80's and have been trying to recall the title for years, recently had a chat with a friend who thought it might if been this from my description.
Really want to see it again, great to see it's heading to BD
Sadly the roadshow version is not anamorphic on the Blu-ray.
Also, the 162 minute version did not get a good review, (on another site), in regards to the transfer.
I haven't watched it yet, but I did kind of skim through it when I got it a few weeks back. From what I can tell the PQ would be in the 3 out of 5 range. Looks like an aged transfer of a film that could use some restoration. At least like most of the MGM/UA supplied transfers it's not heavy on the digital image manipulation! If someone wants to get this they should probably just wait to see if Twilight Time/Screen Archives does another 19.99 sale again.

Unlike most other people I have thought that The Hawaiians is the better film of the two ever since its first release when it did little business in the theater I worked in as a projectionist. The relationship between Charleton Heston's character and and that of Tina Chen is at the heart of a very interesting and entertaining film. Has anybody got a report on the quality of this release?
Twilight Time have included the option to watch either the general theatrical cut in HD, or the original roadshow cut (which currently only exists in non-anamorphic widescreen and standard definition), from the main menu. Please note the roadshow cut does indeed contain DTS-HD MA Mono audio, as well as an isolated score track, and even chapters, too.
The film's theatrical trailer is presented here in 1080p to round out the disc.

Funny how the old MGM DVD is going for $20-$30 more than the Twilight Time Blu-ray, but make no mistake, the TT is just another DVD. This is a really bad excuse for a Blu-ray in 2016. At 29.95 it is highway robbery, but as I said, way cheaper than the DVD, and you get the 1980s presentation of the roadshow to boot, so the TT is the way to go obviously. If I was looking for this and came across the MGM DVD for a few bucks I would just pick that up though.
My above comments were pretty harsh, but written in an outrage over the Roadshow version included in a standard def non-anamorphic presentation. I could only watch the first few minutes then before switching it off.
Since then I bought the sequel The Hawaiians, and decided to watch the Roadshow version of Hawaii all the way through. I feel it's not a bad transfer for what it is, especially if you have a player with a detailed zoom feature like the OPPOs, and you don't watch it on TV larger than 60" give, or better, take. Forget projecting this longer SD non-anamorphic transfer. The color is pretty good: reds, blues, greens and yellows look right, though there may be a generally slight brown leaning. There are muuuch worse non-anamorphic transfers out there; The Last Valley anyone? If you get it, give the roadshow a chance, the story is rewarding.
The HD transfer of the Theatrical version is not leaps and bounds better looking than the Roadshow(!). The main differences are a bit more detail, and the white specks don't make as much of an appearance.
I noticed this film has many long dissolves/opticals, especially early on. As far as I can tell the first non dupe scene doesn't appear until just past the 6 minute mark, but even then the increased detail is negligible.
It's a shame that the Academy Award nominated cinematography doesn't get to shine to full potential due to the very old looking MGM transfer.
Personally, I appreciate the 1.0 center mono soundtrack, instead of the more frequently used 2.0 L/R. They didn't do that sort of thing in theaters.

Where did you find this information and who is Sandpiper Pictures? I've never heard of them before and can not find anything in a search.
I don't know anything about Sandpiper. They seem to have gotten a few TT titles, and other MGM ones too. Their first releases come out in November so we'll have an idea of their quality then.

I would love for the Roadshow Version to be restored. It's a shame that version is still only available via the standard definition video master created in the 1980's. The elements used must be in worse shape now(if they still exist).
Something tells me we won't see a Roadshow restoration unless Criterion got involved like they did with It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World and create their own composite version from numerous sources.
Seems funny to say about the guy who directed Butch and Sundance & The Sting, but George Roy Hill is totally underrated.
Who said anything about George Roy Hill? He was in fact a fantastic director. I think his direction for "Slaughterhouse-Five" may have actually been his best.
