Default HDMI or Optical for BR audio?

Which is better?
I have a 5.1 speaker setup but my receiver decodes Dolby TrueHD etc (Onkyo 605). Right now I have HDMI out from the player -> receiver -> TV, but I havent seen the TrueHD or others light up on the receiver. Should I be using the optical?

No you want to use HDMI audio. Since you did not say what your Blu-ray I have to guess that you bought the 1400 you metioned? If so you need to make sure you update the FW and then set your audio to bitstream. Then you should get your lights.

No contest... HDMI! Make sure that your settings are setup properly too.

Thanks for the responses. Yup I have the Sam 1400. I have the audio setup on it set to bitstream, but have not touched the firmware bc I have yet to have a problem playing any discs (~10 BRs and 20+ SD DVDs now). Ill will check it out!

I do get the DD lights and DTS Nero6 lights (the sound is killer too), but I didnt know if I would get the others if I didnt have a 7.1 (vs 5.1) setup.

Thanks guys

If I am not mistaken the 1400 required a FW update to play the advanced codecs via bitstream. Or it was just for DTS HD MA. Cannot remember which it was.
