Arrow Most Anticipated Films of 2016

So Star Wars came out so there's pretty much nothing else out now until next year. So it's time to look forward to what's next in the new year:

10 Most Anticipated
  1. High Rise -
[Show spoiler]Everything about this sounds up my alley, dark satire from one of the most impressive and distinct directors working currently. I loved Cronenberg's take on JG Ballard with Crash and apparently there's a lot of similarities there, so I think this is the one I most interested in seeing.
  2. Hail, Caeser! -
[Show spoiler]Coen Brothers being very Coen-y, looks wacky and fun, with Deakins working on Cinematography and that wonderful cast, should be a lot to feast on even if it looks like a minor film by the duo.
  3. Deadpool -
[Show spoiler]Not a lot to say here, I like my comic book movies a bit grungy and violent and it's a character I enjoy. Hope Reynolds perseverance with the product reaps benefits in the end.
  4. The Witch -
[Show spoiler]Always one Horror film every year that promises to be distinctive and truly effective and apparently this year it's this one. Let's hope so.
  5. Midnight Special -
[Show spoiler]I love low-key sci-fi films like this. Jeff Nichols is a director who has impressed my on each of his films yet has fallen short of greatness, here's hoping this one is a home run through and through.
  6. Everybody Wants Some -
[Show spoiler]Linklater doing a successor to one of my favourite films ever. Can I buy my ticket now please?
  7. Captain America: Civil War -
[Show spoiler]Probably the most impressive looking Summer blockbuster out the lot, hopefully it's be the one to bring the 3rd Phase of the Marvel movies to more serious territory.
  8. The Nice Guys -
[Show spoiler]Just seems like a lot of fun, I enjoy Shane Black and Crowe and Gosling seem to have good chemistry, the time period seems fully enriched and it's dark around the edges to be less than predictable, hoping it's a bit of a sleeper hit.
  9. Suicide Squad -
[Show spoiler]Unsure as to how well this will work since Ayer made one really great film and one of the worst films ever back in 2013, but the concept sounds different enough, with what looks like a Heat-style film with supervillians, it'll at least be new and challenging as opposed to the other DC film that looks to be coming out.
  10. Kubo and the Two Strings -
[Show spoiler]Love Laika animations despite Boxtrolls being a let down, but this looks different from their typically dark and grungy aesthetic, with more whimsy and character, hoping this is the breakout hit for those talented guys.

Runner-up: Green Room -
[Show spoiler]No trailer for this so can't include it in my top 10 but really enjoyed Blue Ruin and the word of mouth for this is stellar the reaction to it being compared to that of Whiplash, can't wait to see something from it.

There's a Girl on the Train movie coming? I didn't care for the ending, but I loved the book otherwise. I'll want to see that.

Deadpool is the movie i've been looking forward to for a long time now. at one point it was more on my radar than Star Wars was.

Captain America: Civil War is another one i'm looking forward to.

I'm cautiously keeping my eye on Assassin's Creed w/Michael Fastbender. Jeremy Irons' character recently was revealed.....so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Kung Fu Panda 3......i'm a sucker for animation......and i loved the 1st 2.

those are the only ones i can think of off the top of my head.

Doctor Strange.

The potential for this film is astronomical. I have a strong feeling I'm setting myself up for disappoint with impossibly high hopes but this could be more than a super hero film.

I know little about any other upcoming films so I'm sure my interest will be piqued as I see trailers in the theatre.

Captain America: Civil War and The Secret Life of Pets.

I'm more excited, though, to see certain 2015 films like Knight of Cups, The Revenant, and The Witch.

X-Men: Apocalypse is the only big mainstream film I am anticipating in 2016, as of today.

  • Star Wars: Rogue One - no explanation needed.
  • 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - yes yes, I know Michael Bay sucks, but focusing on smaller, specific subjects like this suits him better imo. The trailer looked phenomenal to me, so I expect to love the movie.
  • Star Trek: Beyond - haven't seen the trailer yet. As a casual Trek fan, it should be fun all the same.
  • X-Men: Apocalypse - as great as DOFP was, I expect the follow-up to be epic.
  • Warcraft - putting my faith in Duncan Jones. I like the fact that this will be based on the first game, so I'm hoping for a straightforward man-vs-orc thing here. Haven't seen the trailer yet, but as a casual game fan, this ought to be a no-brainer.
  • Deadpool - looks like fun on a bun!
  • Suicide Squad - I like what I see in the trailer.
  • Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice - might love it, might not, hard to tell what's up with this film. So long as it isn't as stylistically gaudy as MoS, I probably won't be disappointed. But, I do expect extreme levels of debate and controversy to ensue, just like before.
  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - first movie was good, will gladly watch the sequel.
  • Now You See Me 2 - liked the first movie, interested to see what happens next.
  • Captain America: Civil War - I'm sure it'll be enjoyable, but the trailer didn't really enthrall me like Winter Soldier did. This one looks like it'll have a crap ton of stuff going on, and I fear it could get convoluted.
  • Finding Dory - could be cute and funny.
  • The Jungle Book - looks neat and all, but it could suck too. I'd give it a shot.
  • Independence Day: Resurgence - ID4 is one of the biggest movie events of my generation, so this movie feels long overdue. Unfortunately, that could be its shortcoming - I won't be expecting any great story or logic to this, but if enough s*&t gets blown up, it should be a fine and dandy popcorn flick. Or it could be terrible. We'll see.
  • Assassin's Creed - going through more of the games now, and it is psyching me up a bit for this. I won't be expecting anything great - video game adaptations really are horrid most of the time - but you never know, this could be fun all the same.
  • Gods of Egypt - could be total, shallow junk, but I haven't seen any other movie with Egyptian myth in it like this, so it could be awesome regardless.
  • Allegiant - sure.
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them - sure, why the heck not?
  • London Has Fallen - because I enjoyed Olympus, so yeah.
  • Zoolander 2 - because the man makes me laugh.
  • TMNT2: Out of the Shadows - I'm hoping they'll learn from the last movie and make a better one.

There's probably others I'd be willing to watch. It all kinda excited me earlier on, but now that I look at it, I don't think I'll be expecting much. 2015 disappointed me in a lot of ways, and 2016 looks like it could be just more junk. Lots of senseless remakes and sequels and stuff that has the potential to be good or stupid, but it's always hard to tell. Most look like ones I can take or leave - very few that genuinely excites me right now.

I gave up on the MCU last year so the only comic book film I definitely want to see theatrically is X-Men Apocalypse. Might see Deadpool if it gets good reviews.

I've seen every Coen Brothers film so far so I'm in for Hail, Caesar!, even though the teaser didn't impress me.

Haven't educated myself on most of the films being released next year so these are just very preliminary impressions.

Also a Ouija sequel? Hell yes, count me in!

The first one is one of those horror films that are so bad, they are good. I love bad, teenage horror films. Unfriended was one of my favorite horror films in 2015.
