Default Lara Croft: Tomb Raider HD-DVD review

I just set up a HD-DVD Player in my store (while waiting on the Blu-Ray from Pioneer Elite or Sony) so my customers can see a 1080 mastered DVD. I'm displaying the image on a Sony 60" SXRD XBR2 TV. I went and bought Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and have been using it as a store demo since Monday, the 18th., playing the movie continuously from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

First, the player is very slow loading, once beyond that I explored the Disc features, then did the set-up, and began the movie. The feature of calling up the menu while the movie is playing is nice to have, especially when you want the director's commentary on for a particular scene.

The over all image quality at 1080i was quite acceptable, alot of foreground and background detail in the scenes made viewing attractive and eye-popping. Everyone who views it, likes it. Apparently both the player and the Disc are in excellent sync, because I have not had any issues over the 40 hours it was playing, and that's a good thing.

The detail in the dark scenes were just great and I don't know if that's because of the quality of the display or the quality of the mastering and transfer of the Disc. Maybe a combination of both, I suppose. I do look forward to other movie purchases this next week. Any recommendations for reference level quality Hd-DVD's (Best Image!) ?

I'm just wondering if we can actually discern the difference between the 1080i unit and the 1080p unit coming out around Thanksgiving time ? Possibly on the front projection / large screen set-ups it might be noticable. We'll see soon !!!

Best HD-DVD's in terms of PQ:

Training Day, Swordfish, Serenity, Pitch Black and ESPECIALLY Chronicles of Riddick. <- This thing's unreal.

Lara Croft isn't even one of the best looking discs out there, for either format.

I have no problem displaying action/adventure type movie (most people lke the action and special effects) but I can't have a movie like Swordfish running because of nudity and language. Of the others you mentioned, which would be best - the Riddick Movie ? Hope to hear back. Thanks !

I wouldnt show this movie to anyone i like. Now if i disliked them and wanted to punish them thats a differet story. This is one of the worst movies ever made. i wouldnt care if it was 3D BD no way i want to even claim i own this or even claim i saw it.

Well, "Riddick" has an awesome master because when my Dad got his Sony KD-SR60XBR1 (SXRD RP) and upconverting HDMI Sony DVD/SACD player he used it as an example of "how DVD can look HD". Keep in mind we're talking 480p MPEG2 here. There is nothing about BD that would keep it from looking every bit as good as the HD DVD version, even if it was MPEG2!

pitch black was a good movie, or so i thought back when i first saw it. nothing breathtaking or revolutionary, but a memorable, good one anyway.
i totally didn't expect it to be continued and turned into a franchise like it was, thats one reason i'm not a huge fan of the "chronicles" movie. it just "smells" of the authors' greed... i kinda feel they "spoiled" the good original with the second one... though it might still be a good movie, its totally different from the first. its one of the reasons i refused toplay the game too...

anyway, sorry for going offtopic. just all you riddick-likers agitated me, its your fault also, its like saying "i like vin diesel", there's just something sounding very wrong with it

edit: forgot to add,
i like triple-ecks

george... while i am not positive, most likely there was another book (or two) before they made any of the movies. it just so happens because of the following that the first received that they made the second.
