Default Sopranos

I was just wondering how much of an upgrade the Sopranos blu-ray is from the regular dvd. The only reason I ask is that hbo usually has quality dvd releases. I was considering purchasing the the whole series on dvd rather than wait for them all to come on blu-ray. Any thoughts?

If you're a Sopranos fan, it's totally worth it to get them in HD. This is the one TV series I will be replacing when they come out on Blu-ray. I have both Season Six Part 1&2. Since this show uses a lot of low-key lighting, there is a ton of shadows that work well in 1080p.

The first season on DVD isn't that great of a print. The 2nd and 3rd get better. The 4th and 5th seasons are the best DVDs so far since the show was being mastered in HD for HBO at the time.

The question is, how long can you wait? The Sopranos is a show that, when I replace them with Blu-ray, I'll end of giving the DVDs to a friend so that they can enjoy the show as well.

Out of all the DVDs that I own, I have loaned out The Sopranos more than any other set. It's also the only TV show that I can enjoy after multiple (and I'm talking over 7 or 8) viewings. There's just so much crammed into each episode.

I agree with FilmmakingFiasco. I have every season of The Sopranos (seasons 1 - 5 on DVD and 6.1 and 6.2 on Blu).

I will be replacing season's 1-5 with Blu when they are released. Not only are the Blu-Ray's better than the DVDs, they are WAY better than the 1080i broadcast on HBO-HD. Plus, you get uncompressed 5.1 audio. You can't go wrong with the Blu-Ray releases.

If I were you, I'd wait.

I saw The Sopranos blu disc and I thought it was a significant upgrade from the dvd version.

Hopefully I can buy it next year if they ever go on special.

See, that's the funny thing. On Black Friday, Best Buy ran an ad that had "ALL HBO Seasons for 50% off". There was an * on it, but when I read the fine print, it STILL didn't specify which format. It did NOT specifically state which format (DVD, Blu or even HD-DUD). So, I got the Blu-Ray version of Sopranos Season 6 Part II and stood in the mile long line (which moved surprisingly fast). When I got up to the counter, it rang up full price ($110 ) So, I showed the check-out-chick the ad. She said, "That's for the DVDs only and I will not honor that." I said, "OK. Let me speak to your manager." She had the nerve to say, "He is going to tell you the same thing." I said, "OK, let him tell me."

So, this hot-head jack @$$ manager comes up thinking he was all the shi+ and I showed him what was going on. He said, "It's for the DVD only and I'm not going to honor it." I had NEVER gotten into ANY kind of argument with these people, but I was in a VERY fun mood. I wanted to see if I could get thrown out of the store on principal. So I started YELLING and SCREAMING at the guy so that other customers would see me. I was yelling things like, "SO YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HONOR WHAT YOUR AD SPECIFICALLY STATES RIGHT HERE IN BLACK AND WHITE." He was saying things like, "We received a special pallet of HBO seasons on DVD specifically for that and you didn't get that Blu-Ray off of that pallet." So, I responded, "Show me, in this ad, where it says I have to take it off of a specific pallet." I told him that it was "BAIT AND SWITCH" and "FALSE ADVERTISING." He kept saying that the ad was for DVD only and I said, "What is your definition of the word 'all'"? LOL The ad said "All HBO seasons." I even said, "So, does 'all' mean to you, the DVD, but not the Blu-Ray?" He said he wouldn't honor it. I asked him for his name and the number to corporate. He said "gladly" and proceded to give me ANOTHER MANAGER'S business card with the corporate phone number on the back. I saw the name didn't match his name tag and asked to speak to the manager whos name was on the card.

Finally, he got SO tired of my yelling at him in front of other customers that he brought over the other manager. You know how they wear the wireless headsets? The original manager was trash talking me to the manager that was standing in front of me. I could tell.

Anyway, the new manager honored the half price deal and got on his headset and instructed his team to put a sign on the Blu-Ray stock that they were not included in the ad because he believed the customer was right. Then, I told him about the business card fiasco and that his buddy was going to get HIM in trouble. He wasn't too happy about that.

The new manager apologized to me about the first manager and told me that "he could be kind of...um..." I'm finished his sentence with a very nice, "...abrasive." He said, "Yeah, that's a nice way to put it."

Moral of the story, Sopranos Season Six Part II for half off baby!

We did a "side by side". I bought the blu ray of season 6.2 and rented the regular DVD from netflix. We immediately saw details that we couldn't see on the standard def one...the fibers in someone's tweed coat, skin imperfections, the blacks were deeper. The added detail was most definitely there. The colors were still that bland, brown-ish tint that you would see from the show so there wasn't too much extra by way of vibrancy.

Overall I'd green light the blu ray for a purchase without hesitation.
