Default Fox to release 50 BDs by year's end

Ron Epstein of Home Theater Forum just posted this at AVS:

Quote:
Folks,

I am at a Fox Blu-Ray event here in Los Angeles.

As one of the biggest supporters of HD-DVD I can tell you
confidently that Blu-Ray is about to be launched in a HUGE
way and that a 50GB title is about to be released from Fox.

I can also tell you that at least Fox has absolutely no plans
at this time to cross over to HD-DVD. They do plan, however,
to have at least 50 Fox/MGM titles out by year's end on Blu-Ray.

I'll have more to tell you on my website in a few days.
Great news and great support!

That would be insane! How can they put out movies at that feverish pace? That's almost 25 movies a month! If Sony and Disney put out half that number a piece, BD titles would equal or pass the number of HD-DVD titles.

Awesome news! Can't wait for the Blu-Ray onslaught. A strong holiday season will keep Lionsgate from supporting HD DVD and Disney happy where they are.

Since when did Epstein start posting on AVS?

Anyway, very good news for BD. Too good perhaps? Considering they haven't released their first title yet, I have a hard time believing that 50 titles will be released by a single studio in such a short period of time. Not to mention the fact that most studios tend to release titles in more of a "paced" manner.

In other words, I will believe it when I see it.

Would also like to see a list of titles that Fox is going to release before the end of the year. The fact we don't have such a list with 3 months left in the year puts further doubt that this is true.

All that said, I hope it happens!

The current MGM titles might be included in that figure? And as speculated by Peter elsewhere, perhaps (and here's hoping that) a large part of that number will be 007.

Fox previously announced 13 titles. There were about 11 titles in the IFA coming soon list. That makes 24. Throw in 20 Bonds and we have 44 movies. 50 seems very possible if you look at it that way

I would be very surprised if Fox actually released 50 movies by the end of the year. Maybe half that at the most. Although it would be really nice if they did.

If it's the Fox/MGM combination, then it's pretty doable. That said, "holy $^@" Fox. You're definitely throwing your weight behind the format. That's GOOD. Sometimes the "partisan" nature of all of this needs to be expressed clearly by some players in the game. All well and good to have a number of crossover/dual format players, but like Universal and their firm stance, we need to hear it from Fox as they aren't a hardware investor. They're in it just for the software.

First of all this is great news. 50 Titles? Could one possibly be Last of the Mohicans? Me certainly hopes so.

Secondly, the thread linked by NYG is priceless. In it Ron smacks down that obnoxious prick rdjam who is still sore he was banned from HTF! Those of you who frequent AVS know whom I'm talking about.

Hats off to the HTF mods on that move. Not like a blind man couldn't even see it at this point.

If the AVS mods would simply get rid of rdjam and that whack job Oshodi...right there you'd already have a night and day improvement, right off the bat.

It's so simple.

Kind of ironic that rdjam would be banned at HTF, when you consider that HTF is (or was?) as biased towards HD-DVD as AVS. Perhaps more so, in light of Epstein's (the site's owner) comments in the past.

Funny you should mention banning in the HTF...

Today a Admin said I was on the verge of being banned for my pro-BD stance.
If you look at my posts (same screen name) tell me if I'm even in the same ballpark as what the others did.

For what I have posted I've been branded a "Blu-ray zealot"

If you posted a link it would be a lot easier to read what you wrote!

Exactly. HTF is basically "AVS II" for all intents and purposes. Lots of the same exact people and everything.

I hardly think a measly 600 signatures will do anything at all.
Perhaps tens of thousands might, but it seems like a wasted effort to me.
Blu Ray will not lose this war.
