One thing bad about Blu-Ray

I watched my new copy of 2001 on Blu-Ray for the first time last night.

In one of first scenes, where pre-human creatures were battling near a waterhole. The scene was obviously done on a sound stage, I saw a wrinkle in the backdrop. lol! I never saw it there before, but I guess things like that become more obvious in hidef.

Still a way-awesome movie.

gosh I went to look for the specific location, and while looking closely, I see background flaws all over those scenes.
start at 6:49 It is a scene of the prehumans eating brush. You can see a lot of either wrinkles or bad artifacts in the background sky, particularly in the center-leftish area.

Some of the details which were hidden do now show through and the weaknesses of the title become more apparent. But I'm OK with this as studios will be forced to pay more attention to detail, and future movies will benefit I think?

There are pervasive visible brushstrokes on the projected backdrops in that entire section of the movie.

It is not artifacts. It is either wrinkles or a shadow, or perhaps dirt or something else.
It is definitely on the map painting in the background... It is amazing to see that, but it didn't bother me at all. I was more amazed at the quality of the image, the costumes, the acting, and story, etc.

On this subject Im looking forward to seeing Titanic on BD. The scene where they had to fish the bodies from the water late at night is so horrible on DVD, it ruined the movie for me. I work in CG and that stuff should not show up after 1990ish :P

I think that's a big reason why Lionsgate pulled the Dune miniseries from Blu release

I often call it the "stage version" of Dune. On a 27" CRT it was pretty obvious. On Blu it'll be blatant

This problem was noted when 2001 was released in high-def at the end of October. It has been speculated on other forums that the "wrinkles" are artifacts from the front projection mirror system used for the "Dawn of Man" backgrounds. The artifacts were reproduced from the high-definition transfer of this particular film negative. I have seen 2001 over 20 times in the theater and countless times on DVD and have never seen these artifacts until this release. However, apart from this minor anomaly, the 2001 blu-ray is also by far the best version of the movie that I have ever seen. It is true system reference material.

Ya it didn't bother me at all. I thought it was kinda cool actually. I've seen that movie a few times before on regular TV and never noticed it. Yay for blu-ray!

yup! thats what they look like now that you mention it. brush strokes.
