Default Samsung announces Laptop with HD DVD drive

with a laptop attached

http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/09/28...op-yes-hd-dvd/

Yes....Samsung

Quote:
Like Acer and fellow "strong" Blu-ray supporter LG, Samsung is showing the hi-def crowd how to mix it up by opening their Blu-ray love affair to the HD DVD camp. Here we have their M55 -- formerly billed as the "world's thinnest and lightest 17-inch widescreen" at 30.5 ~ 34.4-mm thick and 2.99-kg -- only now packing some swank HD DVD action along with an apparent pixel increase to 1920x1200. Just to run down the rest of the specs on this: you get a glossy 17-inch display, 256MB GeForce 7600 Go graphics, up to 120GB of SATA disk, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, a wide range of in and outs including HDMI and S/PDIF, and suite of SRS audio features all powered by an Intel T2500 Core Duo proc. No drop date but they should pull about €3,000/$3,810 -- yeah, we know. And yes, gentle readers, there is a woman in that photo, now please try to comment on the laptop, mkay? We don't want to get rough, see.
This has got to be the strangest format battle I've seen ever.

Lots of backdoor things can happen in the PC world.

I'm sure this will be spammed on AVS at least a dozen times.

"The format war is over and HD-DVD has won because of this 'earth shattering defection'", even though that's not what this is.

Interesting...

Old news.
Toshiba & Samsung are joint owners of a PC optical drive division.

Much ado about nothing. Move along, nothing to see here

This is good news for HD DVD. Too bad this isn't a Samsung standalone HD DVD player. That might be something I'd buy.

Maybe they'll play it fair and release it with the NR activated for the first 6 months!

Thank you. That's what I remembered.

Doesn't seem like a very wise move to me, in general.

I'm not sure I'd put out any PC or laptop hardware dedicated to any one format this early myself.

If I own a PC, and I have money to blow out the wazoo, obviously I'm going to put both an HD-DVD drive AND a Blu-Ray drive in that sucker and be on my way.

Moves like this just don't make much sense to me, especially in the present day overall context of the market.

You would be making a mistake. Samsung...Toshiba...LG...all about the same. Say 'em in the same breath, especially when it comes to DVD players and the like.

$3,810 - that is even more expensive than the big Bluray VAIO!

Oh well...

So much for another HD-DVD price advantage talking point, right?

Well kudos to Samsung for offering choice. I've seen the Acer 20" laptop w/hd dvd and it was pretty damn impressive.

The low profile HD DVD drives must be plentiful. That's a good thing.

Toshiba is smart. They have got hands on Blu-ray technology everywhere if they want to.
Vice versa is also true by the way.

So far, this is old news imo.

HD DVD is doomed in the PC market

Choice for what?

What are people supposed to do?

Buy this $3000 + HD-DVD laptop and then go ahead and buy another expensive Vaio or some other kind laptop that has Blu-Ray?

To what end?

Sure enough I go to you know where and this is posted as "SAMSUNG SUPPORTS HD-DVD!!!!" several times over and the fanboys are toasting each other and you guessed it, the format war is over and HD-DVD has already won.

Again.

Man, AVS used to be such a Blu-Ray stronghold. How the hell did all the HD DVD fans spring up from thin air?

I wouldn't mind if Toshiba made a Blu-Ray player. Hell politics should never interfere with my toyz.

Are you kidding? It's been an HD-DVD stronghold for the past year, at least.

They can stay away from BD as far as I'm concerned. No loss.

Worst idea ever!

Seriously, I would be far happier with a Sony HD DVD player than I would be with a Toshiba BD player. I insist on better and far more consistent quality from my CE devices.

Well, all Toshiba would have to do is slap a BD-ROM drive in their modified laptop and recompile the Linux OS to boot BD discs!

Needless to say, Toshiba is on my s*** list right now. :f

Let's just wait a little while. How many reports have their been of LG comming out with HD-DVD drive or a Pioneer,LG, even a Panasonic Hybrid. The proof is in the delivery. HD-DVD seems to be the master of Spin. If it were on the Samsung web site I would tend to give it more credibility.
