Léon: The Professional Blu-ray

Léon: The Professional Blu-ray Review

After the notice for release of "The Fifth Element", i'm very much hoping to see the announcement from either Luc Besson or Columbia Pictures for the blu ray release of Leon, a.k.a. The Professional. That is the only movie i really want to see in full high definition right now, i think it would be amazing. sigh.

Haven't heard anything. But having reviewed several of the DVD releases for the Spot, I'm thinking Leon probably needs some work before coming to high def.

Gary Oldman is excellent in this movie. That guy can play anywhere from a Jamaican wanna be drug dealer in True Romance to Dracula to acorrupt drug using cop in The Professional.

As long as we get the unrated international version when it eventually comes out, I'll be happy.

im just hoping, blu ray changes their standard of dolby digital sound to dolby digital plus and dts-hd. From Fatman's desperate gasps and heartbeats to Eric Serra's beautiful music, and with dissapointing releases of Leon to dvd (to a pure a/v enthusiast), Leon deserves a masterful transfer and lossless high definition sound. Leon is my favorite movie of all time.

Hopefully Leon and The Big Blue will both receive the same attention that Fifth Element is currently getting.

Eric Serra's score in all three movies is A1.

From the New York exteriors, to the intelligently shot close ups, i said it when i first posted this thread, this is the one movie i will buy a pioneer plasma, klipsch speakers and a hsu subwoofer for. I cannot wait for it.

Well Leon would be from Sony. So, if anything it'll be PCM. Currently, you're not going to get better sound quality than that. BD implemented DD+ differently than HD DVD. HD DVD can't do full rate 640kbps DD. So they went with DD+ to get 640kbps. BD can do DDs full 640kbps lossy rate. On BD, DD+ is only an option to take advantage of 7.1 discrete sound, as DD won't do 7.1. It's more efficient really, with the exception of DD+ tracks encoded at 1.5mbs, DD offers the same sound quality as DD+ from Paramount, Warner, some Universal titles and Weinstein, but without requiring new audio decoding to access it. What's nice about the exclusive studios from BD, is that they aren't content with lossy sound on most of their titles like Warner, Universal, and Paramount are. Fox, Disney, Sony, and MGM have used lossless audio on all of their titles and from what I've heard don't plan on limiting their titles to lossy sound, ever, which appears the standard for HD DVD. Lions Gate also appears to be getting into the lossless game.

Thank you Chad for explaining that, i now understand. I feel much better that Leon will most likely be released on Blu Ray over HD DVD, i just want to watch it how Luc Beson intended. i say it everytime i post... this is THE only movie im buying a state of the art home theatre for.

Luc Besson's latest film is playing right now. Arthur & The Invisibles. Very yellow. Good animation from the HD trailer though.

I think the 2010 is just a date they filled in for something that hasn't been announced. I'm certain it's not official though. They have no way of knowing it's even coming by 2010, much less that exact year. Sony has never announced a title that far in advance. If it were Star Wars, I'd take it more seriously.

I think Arthur and the Minimoys is slated for Blu-release in Spain.

It's a MGM/Weinstein theatrical release in the US I believe?
