Superb!!! Was worried when the MIS preorder had only the DVD and VCD listings yesterday. The BD listing has come up now. Hope this one gets the Atmos mix.

I doubt if it will get ATMOS

The 4 hour full length movie (as said by Rajeev Ravi) on DVD also looks impossible.

It's possible, but the video quality will be lower than that of the usual 2-hour films in that case. Lagaan was initially released on a single DVD with a DD5.1 track before being re-released in the much superior 3-DVD collectors' edition.

Subject: Kammattipadam DVD / Blu Ray

Hello,

My name is Rajiv Nedungadi. I have been buying Manorama Music, Audio CDs and DVDs / Blu Rays since a long time now.

I understand that as per director Rajeev Ravi – the movie Kammattipadam is going to be released with a full duration of more than 4 hours. I had a word with Irshad from Live Studios who authors the DVDs and Blu Rays for Manorama. As per him, if 4+ hours of video is added to a DVD, the quality of the same would be reduced. This would end up in a negative feedback and response from the buyers.

I have been a part of many movie forums and understand that people are eagerly waiting for the DVD release with 4 hours of the film. To continue the complete movie with 4 hours of video, it would be good if you could provide the movie on 2 DVDs instead of one. This way, the quality and the quantity would be good. For this movie, I am sure that people would not mind paying Rs.200/- for a 2 DVD set.

Kindly consider 4 hours of contents on 2 DVDs at a higher price.

Thank You

Rajiv Nedungadi.

It is going to be a while. The longer cut isn't completely finished yet and will take some time to put finishing touches on. More news should be coming in the next couple of months though.

I would like to say, though, that the film is fantastic, even in the 3 hour theatrical version. I cannot wait to see the longer cut!

Just got the confirmation that the Blu Ray would have the full 4+ hours of the movie, whereas the DVD will be the regular theatrical version

That's great news! Looks like it's the first time in any Indian language where the director's preferred cut is getting released (albeit on Blu ray)... Most probably there won't be an Atmos track this time, but the inclusion of the DC alone is more than worth it...

Yes, first time. Would have been great on DVD as well. I had suggested 2 DVD set at a higher price, but they never considered it.

Maybe they never wanted to take a risk by releasing the DC on DVD, so as to avoid alienating viewers who do not have the time or patience to sit through a 4+ hour film. After all, Blu-ray is still more or less a niche format in India, so their decision actually makes some sense... Did you get a confirmation on the release date? MIS has listed it as a Mid-Aug release, but I doubt it...

They could have released it in Theatrical Edition and Directors Cut, two different editions, if they felt it was a risk. But I feel that everyone would prefer the 4 hour film instead of the theatrical editionl

The DVD is expected in the 2nd-3rd week of August. But the BD may be late to release, might be around September, around Onam Time

Again feasible, but not practical, especially considering the fact that almost all the malayalam home video companies which have ventured into BD production are still relative newcomers in the home entertainment business. And then there's the time factor too: most people are waiting for the DVD release - regardless of the cut - to be out at the earliest. So having the DC released on DVD on top of the already released Theatrical DVD - and at a later date, going by your stats - would result in unnecessary double-dipping and hence, loss for the company, thereby making them rethink about BD production...

In case anyone was curious, the Blu-ray probably won't be available until October at the earliest

Oops... I hope not. Anyway, the BD pre-order has now been listed separately in MIS as "Blu-Ray Premium Pack", with a Sep 15 release date. Looks like the DVDs are out now.

I'm pretty sure it's just in a holding pattern. They may cancel it for now just because it isn't ready
