Ok, I know this is a hard qoestion, but with all the new Blue Ray Players out there and the ones coming out, what do you think which one is the best with PRICE not a factor..

I think the Pioneer BDP-HD1 is supposed to be better as it has an ethernet port for updates you can download, but see what other people say....that said I'm already going w/the Sony stand alone player for the ability to play dolby digital plus over 6 ch analogue. I don't think I'll need the ethernet hook up.

The ethernet can't be used to connect to the internet, only to your home network.

That one hasn't been released imho.

But if I had to choose now, I'd go for the Pioneer Elite.

It's hard to say until the units are actually available. The Pioneer would have to be better on build quality and probably sound quality as well, considering it is an Elite model. It has the ethernet port and supports streaming media, yet the player is not BD-Live, which defeats the purpose, IMO. I don't really need to stream Windows Media content from my DVD player, thank you very much. Also, it is unclear whether Pioneer can or will upgrade the firmware on the player to support BD-Live since, as far as I can tell, all the tech is in their already. Another downer about the Pioneer is it only has 5.1 analogue outs, not 7.1. Pioneer is also keeping very quite about whether or not the player can be upgraded to decode Dolby THD and DTS-MA HD in the box and pass it through the analogue outs.

By all accounts, the Panasonic has a flimsier build quality than the Elite, which is to be expected, but build quality does not automatically reflect performance quality, IMO. What the Panasonic has going for it is the fact that it has the 7.1 analogue outs, can play DVD-As, and pretty strong signs that Panasonic will upgrade the firmware on the unit ~January to support in the box decoding of at the very least Dolby THD, and possibly DTS-HD MA as well.

I can't really comment on the Sony, but I haven't heard anything about any upgrades for it either.

I'm leaning heavily towards the Panasonic.

ok, Imisunderstood what the ethernet port was for I thought if they came out with some new software you could just download an update over the internet, rather than having to take it in to be updated.

Wouldn't it be easier to be able to simply insert an update CD/DVD/BD?

well, using the ethernet to connect to the home network and then assuming ur network has internet access you could get to the net assuming the pioneer supports http or ftp

Yes I suppose so. I just thought the same day they come out with something new you could just download it instead of sending away for the bd/cd, and having to wait you could update the same day you find out about the update

The best Blu-Ray player for me is PS3. HDgames and Movies, for half the cost.
