Apparantly stuff encoded with DivX 3.1(1?) can't be played on the PS3.

I downloaded some divx file to test and of course it doesn't play on my PS3. Sigh.

I am pretty sure 5.1 works with Mp4 AVC .. just encode with that. If it is something you found on the net.. then I have not tried it myself.

I watched a video last night coded with the 5.1 and it sounded fantastic. I love the Divx compatibility.

From my experience, MP4 "containers" cannot hold 5.1 audio, but apparently the AVI "container" (divx) can.

I need to convert MKV files to divx, but can't find mac software that can do this easy for me.

I looked into Divx on my Mac for a bit..but with the 2gb file size limit it doesn't work for me. I convert all my dvds to Mp4 and to retain dvd quality some times they are a little over 2gb.

Handbrake can take dvds to mp4 and it says Doly Logic Pro which is 5.1 I believe. PS3 still reads it as 2ch.. but i do not have a 5.1 setup.

DivX 3.1 isn't supported because:

The Microsoft codec, which originally required that the compressed output be put in an ASF file, was altered to allow other containers such as Audio Video Interleave (AVI). Rota hacked the Microsoft codec because newer versions of the Windows Media Player wouldn't play his video portfolio and résumé that were encoded with it. Instead of re-encoding his portfolio, Rota and German hacker Max Morice decided to reverse engineer the codec, which "took about a week".[1]
From 1998 through 2002, independent enthusiasts within the DVD-ripping community created software tools which dramatically enhanced the quality of video files that the DivX ;-) 3.11 Alpha and later 3.xx versions could produce. One notable tool is Nandub, a modification of the open-source VirtualDub, which features two-pass encoding (termed "Smart Bitrate Control" or SBC) as well as access to internal codec features.

Dolby Pro Logic is a 2ch surround mix.

Has anyone found a solution to rip DVDs to a divx file with 5.1? I have been using the "SUPER" program (just google "SUPER converter") which seems to do about everything. My PC will play them, but not the PS3. It's using DivX5. This is frustrating!

^^^^
i'll give you a program hopefully it's not your SUPER program

it's gordian knot
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gordianknot

you have to learn how to use it simply from the help files or this site
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtop...st=0&sk=t&sd=a

i have to tell you it'll take a lot of your pc's memory so don't work on anything while the program is joining the A/V/subtitle files

Thanks, I'll check it out.

By the way, the program I use is called "SUPER" ... I wasn't using super as a way to describe it :-) Although it is very nice, it will convert nearly any format to any other format--but for some reason I haven't hit the right combination of video/audio in the container that PS3 likes (although WMP and Kaffeine will play all of them).

If encoded properly, the divx movie plays in DD5.1 and it'll sound great. Pic quality ain't bad either, just a little degraded from DVD, not bad for a movie on CD.

thats a big if tho, a lot of the files i've tried don't like working because of audio issues. hopefully sony continues with codec support

So I went back to SUPER and used the "Divx - all players" instead of "divx - 5/6" and it works... kind of. I get video and it looks great, but the sound doesn't come through. I get the DD set up on my receiver, but the icons that indicated which channels are active (in the corner, indicating the speak positions) keep flickering. Something isn't right.

Anyone seen this before?

Visual Hub my friend. Yeah its $20 but look around the Mac sites, all of them love it and so do i. The best converting program for the Mac bar Compressor.

EDIT: Ta da! http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/
