Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that sound like IME? And I thought a certain amirm at a certain AVSForum said PIP commentary wasn't possible on G1 BD players because they lack the second video/audio decoder that is mandatory with HD DVD players. Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Sounds like BD-J to me, something that Fox is implementing as well. Amir said a lot of things that turned out false. He is a great source for VC-1 and HD DVD, but not for Blu-Ray.

That's great news about PIP! Hopefully all the players will be able to do this by then (and not just the BD-Live PS3).

I guess that's why Samsung is updating the firmware to support BD-J due to the announcement of all these BD-J titles.

Anyone but me wondering how they are putting out a movie with 6.1 PCM, IME, and 100 min of video? BD-50? VC-1 encode? Maybe the rumors of Lionsgate switching to VC-1 are true.

I imagine it should be BD-50 as it's release date is December 26th.

6.1 PCM - sweet!

I've never heard of this movie, but it seems that many people like it, so I'll probably pick it up with one of the many gift cards people will give me for christmas. People always ask me "What do you get for someone who has everything?"

This Post at AVS indicates that it is indeed a BD-50 and BD-J title. It's not official however and I don't know the posters credentials.

I'm totally confused, what's the story about this release - where/are there two releases of this? some reviews state 6.1 PCM audio while another version is 7.1 PCM and isn't one version encoded AVC and the other VC-1

??

Blu-ray.com has one listing. Perhaps you could provide links or pics for what you're talking about?

If you check the page for The Descent blu-ray, you'll see a few threads about it. The first version was AVC, 6.1 audio, grainy but beautiful pq. The second version is MPEG, 7.1 audio, and had DNR applied.

There are multiple versions of The Descent floating around, all from Lionsgate.

MPEG and DNR = FAIL

Why bother spending money on making something worse? This is like Echo Bridge downgrading stuff that was released by Disney when it owned Miramax.

Why bother? Because people (and many on this forum as well, who should know better) cry foul when something looks grainy yet true to source, so to appease the clueless masses, the studios go back and butcher transfers by adding DNR. Happened with Predator, and Fox ruined it.

The Australian version is considered to be the best overall release.

You should probably go with that one. Even if you could get one of the first Lionsgate releases there are chances the disc will no longer work. Theres a thread floating around here somewhere about older Lionsgate discs that wont play anymore.
