Thumbs up Sony's flagship UHD BD player UBP-X1000ES

Sony just allocated us the 1st allotment of UBP-X1000ES for the week of 4/17/17. SRP $699.

Here's the .pdf spec sheet.

I read the specs but I don't see what the upgrades are over the X800 -- other than the display.

Probably something to do with streaming? More connections?

Hi Robert,

I saw a couple of references to the model # as 'UBP-X800' in the pdf.
Seems like they would be incorrect? (pages 1 & 2)

Thanks! I'll get it fixed. They should all read UBP-X1000ES.

Smart pricing, BUT, I don't see anything to make someone buy it over an X800 if they are on a budget, unless they need the control options.

Robert, can you move the $299 I prepaid for the LG over and put me on the X1000 list? I really like the X800 and can use it in the bedroom, and put the X1000 in the main HT.

The only advantages as far as I am aware is that the Sony UBP-X1000ES offers a front display, has an optical audio output, 2 analog stereo audio outputs, and infrared inputs. The suggested retail price of $699 would be ok if the OPPO UDP-203 Blu-ray player did not exist for $549. The OPPO UDP-203 for $549 is a much better Blu-ray player with two rear USB 3.0 ports and 1Gbps Ethernet. Sony’s original PS3 has had 1Gbps Ethernet since the year 2006. I would have liked to have seen at least one rear USB port on the Sony UBP-X1000ES since it looks better cosmetically to have a USB drive plugged in the back.

Therefore,my first choice in Blu-ray players is the OPPO UDP-203 for $549, and then my second choice in Blu-ray players would be the Sony UBP-X800 for $299. The difference in price between the Sony UBP-X800 and UBP-X1000ES is $400. For $400 more Sony should have offered 7.1 analog audio outputs. If one was a Sony fan then getting the UBP-X1000ES for $699 just for the two analog audio outputs makes since if one needs mult-zone audio for an existing A/V receiver. However, the OPPO UDP-203 is a much better Blu-ray player for only $549 (according to the specs).

Unless you have owned a 203 and yours was a buggy POS.

I'll give you it is overpriced, but since I really like my X800 and was planning on getting a second and this one is in my range, I'm fine with it.

I have a OPPO UDP-203 with no problems playing discs, and I am considering buying the Sony UBP-X800 in the future because of the price and the streaming features.

Fine for you, plenty of us had buggy models too. I know a couple of beta testers, the launch wasn't the sunshine and unicorn farts that forum posters had you think it was.

Its funny, I can still hop onto the 203 thread at avs, read the last few pages, and its the same stuff. Disc blips and tray issues. I think they got into some buggy hardware because people either have problems, or they dont, still doesnt change my opinion of how they handled it. I'm glad you are happy with yours, but the 203 and X800 have absolutely nothing to do with thread.

Ill have a X800 in the bedroom and a X1000 in the HT. Sony made a nice line of players for 2017 with good streaming abilities (that still need to be improved on).

And if you dare say anything negative, the Oppo Gestapo swarm in like a bunch of locusts.

One new review of the Panny UB400 was not so kind, granted Id like to see more reviews before I buy into anything. I thought it was odd of the claims it had the exact same chipset as the UB900, doesn't seem to make sense from a marketing standpoint. The last year of the Uniphier, Panny only used it in the BDT500 flagship, the lower models got mediatek chips and they did not perform as well.

All that blabbering aside, I'm curious as to the $400 price difference between the X800 and 1000ES. Is it a hustle by Sony, or is it actually a higher end SoC? Will the 1000 be the only one that gets Dolby Vision? Who knows...

In the past, you had a $150 model (6 series), and then the $299 model (7 series), and they were basically the same except for looks and weight (BDP7200 is an example). $400 is a chunk of change for a badge, so I'm real curious about this.

Having a front display is a negative IMO, not a positive.

I like the simplistic displays, if they can be dimmed or are not too bright to begin with.

Whaaat?!

That's the exact reason I'm thinking of getting this as opposed to the X800 (even though I already own the UB900)!

I don't want no lit-up thing while I watch movies. Yuck. It offers me no information I can't get by hitting "display" on the remote.

I've gone to the trouble of putting sticky tape over displays in the past. Why anyone would want it is beyond me.

LOL I guess then you guys probably can't even imagine why someone would wanna pay this amount of money just because it's a Sony and has a front display (but ofcourse I'm sure it'll be a damn good player also)?

I asked Sony Benelux customer service for a release date but they couldn't/wouldn't give me any info on the X1000ES, I'm not even sure there will be a European release? Do you happen to know anything about that, Robert?
