Default Anyone with Onkyo705 able to upscale 480 properly?

I' get the pillar boxed picture when sending a 480i/p image in via component and forcing the upscale to 720p (hdmi). My tv is seeing a 720p signal though. I've heard of this issue and can't seem to find a fix. Guess that's why it's in the "secret" menu.

I've got the 705, and I've seen the exact same thing. The problem resides in the fact that your TV probably already does the up-conversion process for you. When you force the 720p up-conversion, the two processes become incompatible, and all you get is a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The 720p up-conversion will help on some lower quality TVs, but is pointless on the higher end ones. I have seen some cheap LCD TVs get the full 16:9 ratio with the forced 720p up-conversion. It really depends on the video processor.

My advise, leave the resolution setting to AUTO, and forget about it. Your TV probably does a better conversion than 720p anyhow.

I have also heard it said that the forced 720p up-conversion will only help when watching 4:3 content, and does bupkiss for 16:9.
