It's not about the length, it's what they do with it that counts. (tee hee)
Just look at my collection, I've got plenty of old-school epics and I don't moan about them being too long or too turgid. What annoys me about the modern phenomena of 'extended cuts' is them taking something that's precisely edited to fit a particular rhythm and wedging in all this extra stuff which usually just belabours the point and even undercuts the power of a particular reveal or climactic scene because it's been telegraphed too far in advance. There are always exceptions of course, you may recall that I dig the Rogue Cut of DOFP. Why? Because it adds so many extra layers to the movie, it's not just added bloat that simply takes longer to reach the same conclusions, I get a very different reflection of several of the characters in the process. I liked the theatrical but I loved the Rogue Cut. I cannot say the same for the longer version of Leon. |
