its a sony bravia 40" full hd 1080p..
i was a small bit disappointed.. thats sounds a bit greedy maybe, but after reading all the reviews on the movie section of this site i didnt expect there to be a hint of grain!! day light scenes are amazing, but let down slightly by the darker scenes. are we expecting too much??? |

This is the setting where they jack all the settings up to max. It is in this mode by default. |

Yeah most tvs come out of the box with medium or high sharpness. It looks like shit. If your sharpness is on a scale of 1-10 it shouldn't be over 3. If it has been up high .. turn it down and give you eyes a few to adjust. It will look a lot better.

POC was shot on film, deal with it, or buy 80 copies of Crank and be happy.
No offense, but only noobs that haven't calibrated their display complain about grain. Calibration is your friend, don't adjust your TV "by eye". Artificial edge enhancement caused by sharpness settings on your display and lame DNR make Blu-ray look bad. Turn your sharpness to "0" and set DNR to off. Film has grain. Its not a defect. People need to understand this. When you try to remove grain you end up with wax faces and loss of all fine detail like most Warner titles. That is NOT what we want.

Exactly. Anything shot on film is going to have grain, and unlike dirt and scratches you can't remove it without destroying the image detail because the grains are what the image itself is made of on the film. You might as well try to remove brush strokes from a painting to make it look "real" - the only way to do it would be to remove paint, which degrades the image. Doing it digitally produces bizarre results.
All the Pirates movies were shot on Super 35mm, by the way. |
