Default Yamaha 3800, PS3, HDMI, Dolby TrueHD and 7.1 Help

1st post so take it easy,

I've been going at this for a few days now and I can't get this to work the way i thought it should. I get no DTHD with either bitstream or PCM. I also only get 5.1 even with a 7.1 disk. Set up Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is your PS3 set up to output 7.1 PCM? TrueHD/DTS HD cannot be bitstreamed as the PS3 is supposedly missing the chip. And it cannot decode DTS-HD internally (yet) so really your choices are PCM and Dolby TrueHD. If you're trying to use TrueHD, set the output to PCM. This will make the PS3 internally decode the TrueHD track and send it to the reciever as PCM. Which titles have you tried with 7.1 sound?

I have the Yamaha RX-V3800 and I think that you may be confused with the little light on the front panel not lighting up when you select DTS HD MA or Dolby True HD for that matter. Here is what has worked for me.....make sure that Linear PCM is selected in the audio settings on the PS3 and make sure that you are running an HDMI cable from the PS3 to the Yamaha.

On my receiver, only the PCM light lights up on the display, but I can definitely hear a difference between either DTS HD MA or Dolby TrueHD versus regular Dolby Digital. I am also able to check which audio track is playing by pressing the DISPLAY button on the remote (bluetooth remote).

As far as the 7.1 goes, I am not totally sure the answer to that. I only have my system set up for a 5.1 configuration. Here is a wild-ass guess, have you hooked up the additional 2 back speakers (I forget the techincal terms for those speakers, sorry) and are you playing a 7.1 audio track?

The PS3 auto detects and decodes for linear pcm 7.1, everything is correctly wired i do get the PCM light on the front and i only still have 5 of the 7 speakers lit on the front. The Condemned is the disk that i'm running currently with the 7.1 DTS HD audio track. X-Men runs 6.1 and still only 5 are light up.

I'm thinking for getting the 3800. I've read some good reviews, but what do you think of it?

BTW... I'll be hooking my PS3 up to it as well.

I have the same setup. The PS3 cannot currently bitstream DTHD or DTSMA so you'll never see those lights lit on the face of the receiver. What it can do is decode DTHD internally and send it as LPCM; it cannot, however, currently decode DTSMA internally at all. If you set the PS3 to the DTSMA track and the output to LPCM you're not getting DTSMA but instead a lower-resolution compressed DTS track. The upshot is that for the best sound quality use LPCM or DTHD if they're available and always set the output to LPCM so that the DTHD will be internally decoded and sent to the 3800 via PCM.

I only have a 5.1 setup and can't help on the 6.1 or 7.1 issues but if the lights on the front aren't showing those speakers are you sure you turned them on in the 3800's setup menu? I think mine defaulted to 5.1 out of the box with the other channels turned off completely.

i went through the AUTO set-up and the 3800 reconized everything but it defaulted all the speakers to large so i reset and did it again and it worked for all except the front which i manual changed back to small. The 3800 is a gem of a reciever. It replaced my elite VSX-59TXi which is now runs my basement set -up and is still one beast of a reciever. The tonely quality of the 3800 is sharper running HDMI rather than an optical cable. i notice more detail in the sound with slightly more depth. I will enjoy much more once this little bug gets worked out.

The PS3 cannot decode DTS-HD and instead takes the 7.1 Dts-HD and donwmixes to 5.1 core Dts output (@1.5 Mbps).

Pg.21 (PS3 Safety and Support manual)

"*2) This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. audio is output from 5.1 or lower channel"

getting a new receiver wont solve the problem...its the PS3 that cannot output 7.1 DTS-HD MA...if thats what you want, then you need a new player...or wait until the PS3 gets decoding ability...if ever.

...did you set PS3 audio output to HDMI and not Optical?

also check this in your Receiver setting: HDMI Audio Out - OFF

Thanks crack

Boy is my face red...that PS3 audio out did the trick in terms of sound.

Also, what setting should I have the receiver under Blu Ray?

I have it as a AUTO...noticed that none of the Dolby Digital or DTS logos show up...just says Straight PCM

Thanks again

Where do I go if I still need to do this:

"Receiver setting: HDMI Audio Out - OFF"

when you configure your Input buttons. But if its working right, you dont need to worry, sounds like you figured your problem out.

What I do, is keep my PS3 on Bitstream, and only when I access a Dolby TrueHD track to I change it to Linear PCM. (mandatory)

When set to bitstream, the ps3 will let my receiver decode the core dolby and dts tracks (DVD mostly)...

Uncompressed PCM tracks automatically play in Linear PCM even if set to bitstream, so again, bitstream is fine.

Only for Dolby-TrueHD does the PS3 really need to even be set on Linear PCM. you can toggle back and forth between Bitstream and Linear PCM easily if needed. During a movie...hit the triangle button and go to AV Settings

Thank you crackinhedz...owe you big time

My only problem is how do I set the Receiver to output to PCM surrond? (Dolby Trude HD, 5.1 PCM etc. surround)

The only way I can get the Yamaha to display PCM is when I click on the Straight button remote on the Yamaha...the Yamaha will display Straight PCM...but nothing comes out of the surround

I need to click one of the sound field buttons (Classical, Movie, Sur Decode) to get the surronds to work...but then I don't think I'm getting PCM or Dolby True HD...because the display will say "Classical" etc.

Sorry, as you can tell I'm not too bright...appreciate your super help

well first...check on the PS3 settings for HDMI audio output...

Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - HDMI

Then let the PS3 'auto select' the audio.

This is just to make sure the PS3 is outputting correctly. Check on this, and let me know (everything should be checked off), then we can move onto possible settings in the Receiver.
