[EDIT] (Forgot to post the link! lol) http://kotaku.com/339293/gates-to-an...dvr-360-at-ces
This article enlightened me. The important part is not the main article, but in the comments. I'll save you some time and sum it all up. Microsoft (after a deal w/Sony to develop some kind of home theater all-in-one solution) rushed out the Xbox to establish name recognition. Their plan was to release the 360 (and presumably 720, or whatever the next one would be called) with DVR and other capabilities. They never wanted to make a game console. They wanted to use the Xbox to penetrate homes, piggybacking their monopolistic home theater digital download garbage. This is why they chose to enter the market with an inferior product, and are constantly "upgrading" their SKUs. Who knows, maybe there won't ever be a "720", but we'll see a consistent stream of upgraded hardware for the next decade. They are going to fail miserably because their new SKUs are forsaking early adopters and creating consumer confusion. The 360 itself is not a "next generation" machine. Just a substantial upgrade of the original Xbox. On the other hand, every PS3 SKU sold is truly a revolutionary piece of hardware. When you own a PS3, you not only own the most powerful console of this generation, but you also gain the ability to play the next generation of movies and (rumor has it with a firmware upgrade) use the device as a DVR like some speculate the next 360 will. While the 360 only gets more expensive with a constant level of quality, the PS3 will only get cheaper and has the potential to become many times more powerful, a truly future-proof device. Microsoft has already fired its big guns by entering the market early and launching their initial big exclusives. In the next year and a half, the PS3 will respond with MGS4, FFXIII, and other major exclusives. Like HD-DVD, the first to enter the market is not always a shoe-in for the win. I'm proud to own a PS3 and can't wait for what the future holds for this console. Nicely done, Sony. And as for Bill Gates...sucks finally having your ass handed to ya, huh? This is only the beginning. Microsoft won't fall, but their monopolistic empire is starting to slowly stagnate as consumers get fed up with sub-par and overpriced products. Good riddance. Game consoles are not PCs, Billy Boy... |
