Default Umbrella releases The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith -

Quote:
Fred Schepisi's internationally acclaimed masterpiece, based on the novel by Thomas Keneally, is the shocking tale of an indigenous man driven to madness and revenge. Jimmie Blacksmith (Tommy Lewis) is a young Aboriginal half-caste raised in central NSW at the turn-of-the-century, a boy initiated by his tribe but also educated by a stern Methodist minister (Jack Thompson). Looking to gain respectability in European society, Jimmy finds a white bride while performing back-breaking work on local farms, but cannot escape his skin colour, suffering ongoing racism and oppression. Discovering that he may not be the father of his wife's child, and fired without pay, Jimmy explodes in a fury of violent revenge and escapes into the bush with his brother Mort, cutting a bloody path of retribution upon the society that has forsaken him. In 1901, the year Australian democracy is born, Jimmy Blacksmith finally faces his fate, and with it the fate of his people.

- Play feature with introduction by Fred Schepisi
- A Conversation with director, Fred Schepisi & cinematographer, Ian Baker (66 mins)
- Melbourne Premiere from Willesee at Seven, June 1978 (7 mins)
- CELLULOID GYPSIES: Making Jimmie Blacksmith - Interviews with key cast and crew, including director, Fred Schepisi and actor, Tommy Lewis

Great news! Another Video Nasty now (well, soon) available! I've been wondering about this one for a while now, ever since seeing the trailer. Yeah - have to pick this one up!

I fired off a query to Umbrella last week, asking when we might see this one on the shelves.

The reply is:

Quote:
Thank you for your enquiry. The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith blu-ray will be released sometime next year, 2018. Watch our Facebook page for updates on the release date and more.
(Yeah, I want to see a cleaned-up Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, but it's going to take more than that to tempt me into Facebook!)

I also asked about a BD of The Last Wave, which Umbrella currently has on DVD, and got:

Quote:
There are no current plans to release The Last Wave on blu-ray but I have noted your request on our acquisitions list for consideration and will keep you updated should there be any news on this.
So ... the story so far.

More importantly, they have an acquisitions list? Time to email them my wishlist.

. . . yeah, yeah - I just got done watching all the Ozsploitation trailers on the NQH disc. Sue me.

The good thing about THE LAST WAVE is that Germany put out a really nice looking blu-ray a few years ago:

So I swung by the facebook page to see if they had any news and was rewarded with this:

Quote:
Restored from the original interpositive CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH is coming to Blu-ray for the first time ever in March!
No specific date, but now we've got a month!

Yeah, Deep Discount DVD has it on their page - but I'm waiting for a 15% off coupon before I pull the trigger.

Mine shipped from DDD on Friday, so it'll probably be here at the end of the week. I'll be sure to give you some thoughts then.

Watching this now....sigh!

Not sure who or what was responsible for the brand new remaster but it's not good.

A typical Umbrella encode riddled with compression artifacts & heavy, heavy DNR that results in awful motion blur from the very first scene.

Very disappointed.

Hopefully another label can do this one justice.

One of my favourite Australian films.
What the hell went wrong with this transfer?
I'm no expert but it's like every second frame has been removed :/
Weird judder. Which can be seen best, I believe around the 20 minute mark,
there's a scene with Jimmie and a cop...cop blows smoke into air. It freaking looks like it's in slow mo...I just don't understand why. Devastated.

If anyone wants to chime in with an answer....

I only got half way through it.
Will try second half tonight out of love but the problem is really disorientating
and a true let down. The film deserves better.

The hard-of-hearing subtitles are a bit of a mess as well.

Damn, this release appears to just keep getting worse with every passing day...

I gotta admit, from everything posted here so far, I hope someone with the physical blu-ray release puts a word in with Umbrella to let them know how disappointing the release is.

I have no compelling reason so far to drop a single dollar down for this unless someone can confirm the problems listed above are actually a batch pressing issue as opposed to shitty encoding, mastering or authoring, or whatever the hell issue is going on with it.

Australia sucks when it comes to releasing our most important historical cinema releases. It's some pretty shameful shit when you sit down and think about it.

Like, I really dig Umbrella releases when they get it right, but for real, this is one film that deserved a hell of a lot more care afforded it than it appears it got.

Bugger...
