Default DVDEmpire.com - THE WAR IS OVER!

Just more of the same, but nice to see the Warner news spread like a wildfire:

The War Is Over! Warner Bros. Turns Blu!
The rumors had been circulating, but the shock was still great.

In a move that can only mean the ultimate end of the HD DVD format, powerhouse studio Warner Bros. announced today that they would be going exclusively Blu-ray. The effect will take place in May of 2008.

The official statement from Warners’ Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer is as follows:

"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the mostdirect way to give consumers what they want. The windowof opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if formatconfusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusivelydistributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass marketsuccess and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and mostimportantly, consumers."

With Warners out of the HD DVD business, Paramount and Universal are the only two major studios supporting HD DVD exclusively.

That's the word that seems to be on the street after yesterday. Now, we all know that there are still two other film companies that need to defect from HD DVD, and that the retailers need to abandon HD DVD sales, too. But the folks on the street have likely heard and believed that the War is Over and will act, and buy, accordingly. Like a self-fullfilling prophecy.

I was checking out Amazon sales rankings for the PS3 and for the first time I can recall the 40GB PS3 with Spiderman 3 is outselling the Ps3 80GB Motorstorm Bundle. In addition, the blu-ray remote control for the PS3 is at #13 in Amazon video games sales rankings (I check those 3-4 times a week) and that is the highest I have ever seen it. Bottom line is that a lot of HD dVD owners are now buying into blu-ray
