Default Audio Question - Might Sound a Tad Foolish, but Hey!

Say I were to pick up a lossless capable receiver, such as the Onkyo 605. Can I hook up any kind of speakers to it? Say, speakers that came from a good HTiB? I know the wiring is the same (red/black, +/-) but is there some sort of electric-related thing which would impede me doing so?

/lack of knowledge

make sure it's within the ohms capability of the reciever (95% sure they will be) and you're good to go

That is precisely the thing I was thinking, hence why included the word 'impede' sneakily in my first post.

Hi all, I have a problem that's driving me nuts. I can play games and get surround sound, but when I watch a Bluray movies all I get is the front 2 speakers and bass...no surround. I have checked the settings to make sure it's set to 5.1 but no luck.

I have my sysytem set up as follows; PS3 to Surround reciever HDMI
Surround reciever to TV HDMI.
HD box to TV HDMI
HD box to Surround reciever OPTICAL

Any help with this would be great, i've been to a few stores to get advice but with no luck. Thanks .

what receiver? (also check receiver setting and make sure HDMI Audio out is set to OFF.)

also, depending on your receiver, it may not process HDMI audio...in this case you should set the PS3 to output as Bitstream.

It's a Samsung Reciever. Maybe it does not process HDMI as I could not get surround with my HD box untill I got an optical cable.

Thanks for the reply...what should I do next?

set the PS3 HDMI audio to output as Bitstream. If youre still getting 2 channel sound, then you may need to connect the Optical cable as well. (and then set Optical audio output to bitstream also)

Most HTIB's come with cheap speakers that are only rated at 6 ohms. I wouldn't pair those up with these newer receivers as most of them are rated at 8 ohms. If you want max output then I'd suggest you get 8 ohm speakers.

A good HTIB???...lol kidding....As long as the speakers did not connect to a subwoofer and connected via the -/+ to a head unit/Amp. The reason is the HTIB's that connect to the subwoofer usually do not have a crossover in them and could cause them to blow (no pun intended) very easily. But nothing ventured...nothing gained. Usually the OHM rating of the HTIB speakers is 8-16 and will not pose a problem for your receiver.

Have fun

No, they connected straight into the receiver. Alright, thanks - I'm going to look into the manuals for the specifications.
