Default Microsoft not ruling out BD drive for Xbox

They said it already a year ago, but this is recent:

but said Microsoft's add-on HD DVD drive alone has outsold all standalone Blu-ray players combined.
Moreover, Penello noted that any customer who purchased the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 was doing so solely to watch movies, while only a comparatively small number of PS3 owners have been purchasing Blu-ray films.
wow, thats seems really really stoopid. 87% is a small number.

And, while we're at it, similar quotes from last year, just to point out how 'commited' MS was to HD DVD all along:

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/05/mi...o-blu-ray-sti/

The betamax analogy was dead-on, we've got to admit...

They will eventually run into limitations in DVD for games, that's for sure...

If consumer choose the HD DVD format, then why it's still 2:1 in the USA, 3:1 in Europe, 14:1 in Japan.

Why there isn't a HD DVD burner yet for the pc
Why the cheapest HD DVD rom is still the Xbox 360 drive

LOL

Until Toshiba goes out of business? What an idiot. I think he meant to say until HD DVD goes out of business.

I sort of agree... except that I think it would be just TOO FUNNY to see Microsoft have to release a BD drive for the 360 -- especially since that means adding BD-J (Java) capability to their system.

The suffering almost makes it worth it.

Wait wait wait...

Let me look back again at the chart from Toshiba...

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...722#post477722

Toshiba (standalone + Add on) = 49.3%

Sony + Samsung = 43.1%

I estimate Pana around 4% according to the graph...

So -pure- Blu Ray = 47% vs say 49% for HD DVD, and 4% of combos (mmh, where are Sharp or Philips in there? Blu Ray exclu. nm).

This chart obviously does not include the PS3s. That's obvious.
So wait... Doesn't make sense if we include the add ons with this latest declaration.
Ok, let's say the Add ons aren't actually included in this chart (Tosh would be stupid not to include em, as they do produce them, but /shrug).

So what MS tells us, is that -according to them-, they sold nearly as many Add ons as Toshiba ever sold HD DVDs? From 1/3rd in November (total 750k, including 269k Add ons) to 50% of the total of HD DVD players?

Why do I smell a huge load of BS here?

Just goes to show you the caliber of marketing folk MS are dealing with...

Sort of like those idiots that run around using big words not knowing what they mean making a jerk out of themselves.

Microsoft will be producing a BD add-on within 14 months. As momentum for Blu-ray builds and it becomes a key selling point for the PS3(even more so now that Blu-ray has won the format war) Microsoft will do anything to stop Xbox 360 owners from picking up a PS3.

I notice that although at least 2 Microsoft insiders have answered other questions after Rob Tomlin's question on the insider's thread on AVS about whether the XBOX360 is powerful enough for them to do a Blu-ray add-on (decoding to HD DVD's lower specs and decoding stuff at Blu-ray's higher specs are not the same thing), neither of them have touched that question. The post is here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...5#post12728455

If Microsoft wants to do a Blu-ray add-on, the first question is whether than can meet Blu-ray's requirements for what it takes to be a Blu-ray player.

I don't think so. They could not use it for games therefore it will NOT happen. They would rather users download movies on their network and SONY would rather users buy a PS3 = it's a lose/lose situation for both if Blu-Ray shows up on the crapbox 360.

The next generation of Microsoft video game console surely will have a Blu-Ray drive built in but it will be used for games AND movies but primarily Microsoft will put it in there for games (size of disk). I would'nt put it past Microsoft to ship the new console with the movie playback functions of the Blu-Ray drive "de-activated"... that way people keep downloading their movies (they would probably sell an "activation" kit or something).

"It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware said when asked whether Microsoft would support a Blu-ray DVD accessory in the event that HD-DVD failed."

A 360 add-on would be a great idea to gain even more market share. There are millions of 360 owners out there and an add-on in the 200 or less range would do some good for HDM.

I'd just assume 360 gamers interested in Blu-ray buy a damn PS3, but then again as a gamer I care about the console as much as the format.

It also adds more power for PS3 fans, because we can say we got it first.

Fanboy talk aside, there's way too many of the same thread going on here.
