Tyler10,
I ordered mine on Sept. 9th, and when I called I also gave her my specific order # and she used that to look it up and confirm that I would still be getting mine from the October 25th shipment. And less than 24 hrs later I got the email telling me that it had been postponed. But all is well, I made some calls, BestBuy said they would be getting the Philips but did not know when, and then I called the local Walmart and they said they had 3 in stock and ready to sell. So I now have one hooked up and tested with some clips from Underworld: Evolution and it works great. Takes about 17 seconds from pushing the close door button until the movie comes on the screen, but it looks great and it is loading and playing no glitches right out of the box. I've also quickly run through some of the 'previews' on the Underworld blu-ray disk, and also put in a regular DVD and they just load and play like they should. And if you go to the scene selections it takes maybe 5 or 6 seconds to start the selected scene. And I know what some of the others on this forum say about people who buy their home theater equipment from Walmart, but hey, they had the Philips in stock and ready to go, and also $100 less than Amazon who said they would not be able to ship until the end of December so I don't think it really matters where you buy it as long as they have the product that you want. And I think I will be happy with the Philips for a few years until the prices come down and then I can think about upgrading to a higher quality firm such as Pioneer or whom ever might be in the market at that point. But I doubt I will be giving ANY Sony product a really close look for quite a while at this point. Anyway, I have Blu-ray disks to watch, so I'll be signing off now. If you all get tired of waiting for Sony to release their player, give the Philips some consideration. Then make a few calls and see if a store near you has it in stock and ready to go. |

For Josh,
I took a few pics for you, they might be a little blurry. I'm very happy with the Philips, I watched 3 Blu-ray movies last night (Total Recall, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and House of Wax, and then copied some photos onto a memory stick and put them in the player's memory card slot. And then went to the main menu and clicked down to the photos menu section and then show them in a slide show. I did not turn it off at all during this and there was no problem with it playing movie after movie and then switching to the slide show. And I thought the movies looked great. No dropped frames, or locking up or stuttering, etc. And the menu's worked just fine, letting me pull them up and change audio options on the disks that had more than one without stoping the movie. The front of the player has a fold down front on just the bottom part of the front which covers the memory stick slots and the manual controls for the player if you do not want to use the remote. But does not cover the tray slot or the button for the tray. Last edited by Josh; 07-30-2007 at 03:16 PM. |

Hi guys. I just picked up the Philips at Wal-Mart, and it is definitely a re-badged Samsung. I'll post comparison pics of the back panel if you like.

Not really a rebadge because it does have some internal components which are different. But Samsung does make both. I would like to hear how you like it once you have it set up.

I ended up just buying a Philips at an actual Wally world as they were too slow about shipping one out.
My pj lamp died...so I ended up using my old lamp and Hi power screen instead of my gray screen to check out the Philips. The players remote controls tv,audio, aux and the player itself....and is far easier to use than either the Toshiba HD-A1, RCA or Samsung remotes The player loads in about 23-24 seconds and seems to function like it should as far as glitches, hdmi errors ect.....there are none. My original Samsung would not sync with my pj via hdmi were this Philips has zero problem. I watched Unerworld Evolutions which looked obviously sharper via hdmi than it did via component on the Samsung. The S/Q also seemed improved...even though it was already fantastic on this disc via the Samsung. I also saw better shadow detail on the Philips than the early Samsung while watching U/E. I will report back after some more testing of so so...as well as reference BD movies in a couple of days. |

The player is equal to the RCA and HD-A1 for P/Q....as long as you have good software.....much like all hd dvd players don't look very nice when you watch movies like Leathal Weapon, Fugitive, Perfect Storm, Full Metal Jacket, Sleepy Hollow, Traffic ect.
Garbage in = garbage out = a theory that works equally well on both formats. ![]() The main differeance is all of the BD players actually function correctly without freeze ups, hdmi errors ect....and they remember were you left off in the movie. |

Kind of like the difference between DTS and DD soundtracks, or a great direct to PAL transfer disc image over a NTSC image, or a Pioneer Elite over a RCA ![]() But if the masters included in BD-50s are just ported-over HD-DVD-30 masters made at 10Mb/s instead of custom made transfers for BD-50 at up to 40Mb/s, mmm no, no much better picture. Yet ![]() Oh and I don't know if HD-DVD can have the BD Fox sensorround tracks? |
