Question Will classic anime be good on Blu?

I wonder if older anime like Honneamise, Kamui no ken, Mononoke, Castle of Cagliostro, Akira, older Miyazaki ... would look really better on Blu-ray. They were created as 2D so there won't be any screen depth (one of the most important hings for me in Blu).

Color saturation (reds in particular) are much better on Blu-ray than DVD. While it's not always going to look miles and away better quite a lot of it will look just fantastic on Blu-ray.

Plus there's improvements to audio to consider.

i don't know, i suppose it depends on what kind of condition the original source material is in.

i'd love to see the original bubblegum crisis in HD, but i fail to be optimistic that it's going to look that great.

Most of the OVAs were probably shot on a D1 I guess, which even though an excellent master (720x480 Digital component), is still SD resolution.
Now some of those older ones, specially the ones headed to Theeatres like the Myazakis, were probably shot on 16 or 35mm.
-Those-, if the demand is there I guess, could be re-mastered in HD 1080.
If the producers were greedy, they could do a SD video to HD transfer also, but people would probably see that coming...

Akira, the Myazakis, Venus Wars, Ghost in the Shell (Innocence in particular would be A-Mazing visually) and a few others would be awesome.
I am afraid I'm never going to see Macross Plus in HD though :/
Macross Frontier can't come fast enough

I would love to see the new evangelion films released on bluray - i'm almost certain they will be as they probably won't make it to any disc format until the end of 2008 - 2009

I think Akira already looks pretty good on dvd and would only look even better on blu ray

clarity, resolution, detail, colors... these are all things that can be enhanced with watching anime on Blu and not DVD.
Any Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli title would be a welcome addition to my Blu-ray collection. Also, titles like Ghost in the Shell (both films) would greatly benefit.
The only things that would not benefit from HD would be the made for TV series that are lower budget.. they do not have the quality or detail needed for a BD release, but if the BD were to use an SD signal with them, it would fit an entire series on one or 2 discs.

Just cause its 2D doesn't mean it won't look better on Blu-ray. In fact I think it can really enhance many titles. I just watched Paprika on BD, and I think it looks awesome! I can't wait to watch Tekkonkinkreet (just got it)!

I'm a regular Macross hater (Rick Hunter and MinMei have to be the Japanime characters I hate the most), but to see Southern Cross and Mospeada (thanks to you, Mr MACEK!!!) with an awesome master would be welcome

The restorations of Macross, SC and Mospeda were all SD unfortunately. They'd have to do it again

All Ghibl, Akirai and Castle of Cag are 35mm originating. WB owns the rights in Japan, so I expect to see it out there sooner rather than later. Manga, who knows.

Everything TV and OVA up through the late 90s was shot onto 16mm film, and finished on videotape. Don't expect miracles. They're reissuing the Gundam movies from a new HD master in Japan on DVD in June, but the only Blus they're doing are Char and F91 because they are 35mm.

Mononoke is not old..

My guess is shows like Slayers, Ranma1/2, Hellsing, etc won't really benefit from Blu-ray. To be honest this is fine with me.. as the price of DVD decreases anime box sets will drop a lot. . The latest DVD encodings are not half bad honestly.. for most animation they can look just fine.

Wings of Honneamise is a revelation in comparison to all previous releases. both in video and audio. It's certainly not a clean film because they didn't *restore* it and clean it up, but it's leaps and bounds over every previous home video incarnation.

I read that there will be issues with some anime because of the mixed frame rate of 24 and 30 resulting in a max of 1080i content wise.

Disney has the rights to release all Studio Ghibli films in USA. This means we are likely to (someday) see these come to Blu-ray in USA as well.

Honneamise has been out on BD in the US since a few months ago and I posted a thread with shots showing the difference between DVD and BD versions - the Bandai release has both so it's easy to show. Believe me there IS a difference. Just like with live-action movies detail and colors are much crisper than on DVD.

Here's a link:

Tekkon Kinkreet and Paprika both look absolutely amazing on Blu!
As for older TV series...I don't see them releaseing anything that wasn't shot 16:9 for a long time. Movies are gradually rolling out at least!
