Default Picked up Yamaha RX-V1800 yesterday, WOW..PCM 5.1 is amazing

Well after a couple months of debating on upgrading my Yamaha HTR-5890 to a model that would give me HDMI, uncompressed pcm ect.. i finally ended up buying it yesterday. After setting it all up, i put in AC/DC concert into the PS3.. well talk of a major difference in sound! I couldn't believe how dead dolby 5.1 is compared to pcm 5.1
Then we popped in Cars, and watched the first 10min... Mother of God.. my living room as never been filled with so much sound coming at me in every direction.
I don't think i can ever live with just dolby 5.1..it will never be the same!
I felt the same way i did when i watched my first blu-ray (cars) and couldn't believe all the details i had never seen before. Now it's my ears jumping up and down!

If anyone is still on the fence concerning upgrading their receiver, to enjoy these new audio formats.. don't be! It's well worth it!

Congratulations! Great move! I'm really envious of you. I have an HTR-5960, and I've been eyeing the 1800 for a while now. So, you know how great Yamaha receivers sound normally, and you immediately noticed that much improvement, huh?

You're killing me! I just spent the last two days convincing myself that my current Yamaha sounds great enough with DTS and DD 6.1.

Seriously though, great choice. I cannot emphasize enough how excellent sounding Yamaha receivers are.

Yeah I noticed the same thing.. I couldn't believe the difference either from Dolby 5.1 to the PCM stuff..

I never thought it would be that big a difference... I am glad I was wrong to think that.

I like mines. Then I upgraded from the PS3 to the Panny BD30 so I could decode DTS HD-MA as well.

I have the older RX-V2700. Whilst it doesn't do TrueHD and the like, it does do PCM. And I totally agree - the difference is just staggering!

I couldn't agree more with you. I've had this receiver for about a month now and it has made all my old movies NEW again!

Ah yeah it's a big difference.. i was telling my g-friend how i felt cheated for all these years of listening to dts & dolby 5.1.. but what can you do, blu only came to our rescue a few years ago.
But yeah,, i had to rewatch most of my movies, and i just cant believe some of the sounds that weren't there in 5.1
Rataouille, Cars, AC/DC concert, Spider Man 3... just a few that i watched again in the last 3 days. It's just like watching a new movie,, it's that good.
Certainly the AC/DC concert,, that's just insane,, talk about good audio.

I figured if i can sell my old HTR-5890 for close to $500, the 1800 cost me $1100 taxes in,, so $600 is not too bad for the upgrade. The longer i would have waited the less the 5890 would have been worth.

I was wondering about this for a while.
At first I was thinking that the Dolby 5.1 soundtrack was superior to pcm 5.1 on movies that just have the two audio formats, that was because I went through both audio modes while listening to the same scenes in a movie and found (with an optical cable only) that the dialog was sent to the front speakers and had no center dialog at all. Besides the center speaker not outputting any audio, I couldn't hear any noticeable advantage with pcm, it was just...different. I knew it was 5.1 and that the center speaker should work, but couldn't figure out why it wasn't. My receiver also shows which speakers are being used and didn't highlight the center one.

After looking at the forum I found out that I would need the audio hooked up through HDMI (which my receiver is incapable of) to get the pcm track to work properly. Now after reading this thread, I can't wait to hear all of the movies that I have in pcm that don't have Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD MA!

I am excited for you! Congratulations!

I love Blu.

I just want to know, when you guys say PCM is so much better then DD 5.1, i agree, but do you have the PS3 volume set to + 1 or 2? or just normal?

I bought the 1800 a couple months ago and it was the best money I spent next to my 1500W Definitive Technologies Supercube I. The whole house shakes when that baby is kickin.

I too love my RX-V1800 I just wish I could use it's built in TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoders, but PCM still sound awesome. I guess my sound is set to normal, but where do I go to find out, I haven't seen any options for +1 or +2.

well I have until the 17th of this month to return my Denon 2808ci for the Yamaha RX-V1800. while the Denon is Amazing. the Yamaha has 2 more HDMI imputs. and is putting out more watts per channel than the Denon model.

I am currently using BOTH of the HDMI inputs on my denon and fear I will want more inputs down the road. the yamaha looks to be the way to
go.
here is a side by side comparison on crutchfield.com
