Default Sony UBP-X1100ES 4K UHD Blu-ray Player

Sony well soon be releasing their top of the line flagship Blu-ray player called the UBP-X1100ES. The advantage of this player over the Sony UBP-X800M2 is a detachable power cord, RS-232 port, two channel analog RCA audio output, and optical audio output. Also might have front LCD display but needs to be verified.

Everything else between the UBP-X1100ES and UBP-X800M2 is exactly the same including the picture and sound quality. The Sony UBP-X1100ES is for someone that wants more video and audio jacks on the back of the player when compared to the UBP-X800M2. There is no 1GB of internal storage for BD-LIVE, therefore a USB flash drive of at least 1GB in size needs to be used on the front of the Blu-ray player to access BD-LIVE content (no rear USB port and no USB 3.0 port). The Sony UBP-X1100ES list price is $599.99

Both the Sony UBP-X1100ES and UBP-X800M2 offer Dolby Vision HDR with DVD-Audio and SACD support.

This is good news for the format and enthusiasts, what with Oppo, Cambridge and now Samsung out of the hardware market, but why can't Sony offer an ES model that boasts the build quality of the Oppo or Cambridge units at least? Something with an aluminum faceplate and a larger, sturdier chassis...

Yeah I wish they would do that even if it mean't the player would be limited. An ES model for Sony used to mean great construction and build quality. All it means now is a front display, a few more ports and a detachable power cord.

This is pretty much the same thing they did with the X800 and X1000ES models. Except these players will offer Dolby Vision.

My guess is cost, they don't want to spend much on it now. I don't see this changing soon either.

It's to bad they had some gorgeous players before DVP-S9000ES (DVD player from early 2000's) and the DVP-S5000ES (Blu-ray player from late 2000's).

I remember the first ES BD player; what a beauty with the blue-tinted face (though parts of that unit did smack of Panasonic's design with the DMP-BD10).

I agree with you on all fronts.

Sony can make a ultra high-end Blu-ray player, however the player might cost around $1,100 like the Pioneer Elite 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The Sony does not have as good as build quality as a Pioneer or OPPO, however the build quality is medium when compared to low end Blu-ray players for under $200. Most people well be happy with this Sony. For in production Blu-ray players that play both SACD and DVD-Audio there is only two brands to choose from now Pioneer and Sony. My first choice would be the Pioneer and second choice would be the Sony.

Hopefully the new 2019 UBP-X1100ES and UBP-X800M2 well offer the following features with a firmware update

Sony hopefully in the future well issue a HDR10+ firmware update to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs that are encoded with HDR10+. That is a feature that Panasonic offers on their latest 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players.

In addition, the new Sony Blu-ray players well hopefully offer Dolby Vision HDR streaming for both Netflix and VUDU. The Roku Ultra only offers HDR10 and people that want Dolby Vision HDR streaming have to own select flat panels with that built in feature. At launch or with a firmware update hopefully Dolby Vision HDR streaming well be supported over HDMI 2.0b.

That’s not gonna happen any time soon if ever, on top of Sony not being on board with this they claim their sets already do something very similar to what HDR10+ does.

And this is one reason why some people well purchase the Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players so that they can have HDR10+. HDR10+ is a important feature since some studios only release their 4K Blu-ray titles with HDR10+ (Also streaming providers like Amazon Prime use HDR10+). The only negative of Panasonic Blu-ray players is no SACD and DVD-Audio support.

Now Pioneer is suppose to come out with a HDR10+ firmware update this year for their 4K Blu-ray player. Also OPPO Digital INC unofficially is suppose to support HDR10+ and may come out with a firmware update that officially supports HDR10+.

Sony offering HDR10+ support for disc and streaming would make the Sony 4K Blu-ray players more attractive.

YES, the Pioneer player is built like a tank, and it's my opinion (only) that their audio section should thusly be superior. But so is the $1200 price (I dunno, is that the current price?)

If you only have $400 to spend for a UHD player with SACD and DVD-Audio included, the Sony should perform well. Since it's not available yet, some tests and opinions by reviewers will be coming in May-June after the player is released.

Any idea of pricing for either one? Maybe $300-400 for the M2 and $500-600 for the 1100. At least I hope it's reasonably priced .

I hope DV is auto so you don't have to manually engage it like in the X700. That would a deal breaker for me.

Are you sure it's a manual toggle? I've reached out to Sony support twice on this and they say I can leave DV enabled and it will default to HDR10 when DV is not available but HDR10 is.

The display menu when watching HDR10 content with DV enabled says HDR and it looks like HDR...

Unless they very recently updated, it still tries forcing DV processing.

With HDR discs, it's not really a big deal (if you can even notice at all), BUT, the few times I've forgotten about it, and watched a regular blu-ray, things are definitely brighter than they should be (blacks become greys etc).

Ah, well that explains why my Toy Story blu-rays were so vibrant.

I guess I don't watch that many blu-rays these days, and I watch black & white movies and TV shows when I do.

I probably wouldn't notice it as much on something like TOY STORY etc. I watch a lot of horror movies, so usually as soon as the first dark scene pops up I definitely notice that I forgot to turn it off.

As someone who owns an LX500 and just sold his x1000es (today, actually) I can honestly say the Sony held it's own. It wasn't nearly as well built but it was hefty enough to feel well made. It was no slouch in the a/v criteria either. The Elite still has the edge but the new x1100es will give it a good run. And at the price it will launch at will make it a great choice for those on a tighter budget.

Sony has always made some of the best Blu-ray players on the market if you don't care about build quality. Both the X800 and X1000ES still deliver great video/audio performance if your happy with HDR and don't care about DV.

Now that Oppo is out of the picture Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer make the best UHD players.

Looks like the Sony X800 M2 is launching at $300 so the X1100ES might be a good deal as well.

Yes hopefully that article is correct. There is a possibility that the Sony UBP-X1100ES might launch at the same list price as last years model. The big difference is the faster processor that offers Dolby Vision HDR support.

Faster processor for the 1100 but won't the M2 also do DV? I figured the differences between the two would be the processor, being rack mountable, and weight/shielding in the 1100's favor.
