I know that Modern Marketing would never allow for it, but I'd love to see some old school vintage Japanese style Kaiju poster artwork for the cover. Ah well, I'm buying it for the disc, not for the front.

Didn’t they create cover art with that Kaiju style for Kong Skull Island? I agree that would be nice!

I also need to see this film ASAP!

Any love for this movie? It’ll be out shortly (8/27) on BD and 4K. Massively underrated film IMO (especially with the critics slamming it). Anyone else really enjoy this?

I watched the standard Blu-raythe middle of last week and posted my comments mistakenly in the 4K thread. Here's my original and amended comments about that standard Blu-ray....

Yes, the Atmos track is really impressive. A *LOT* of bass/subwoofer activity, constant rear and surround audio action. My only complaint with the audio is the bass is often overbearing while dialog is often too low in the mix during big action sequences. You get a *lot* of surround action in the mix. The Dolby Digital track is actually a bit better mixed but doesn’t quite have the power of the Atmos mix. Honestly, this movie sounded drastically better then the theatrical showing I caught. It's probably one of the best action/sci-fi audio mixes in the past couple years.

Picture quality varies greatly due to various conditions the film was shot and the controversial single color saturated “look” they were striving for often makes for flat, grainy (and rainy of course) images of the monster battles. The Blu-ray replicates the visual theatrical experience nicely.

The movie itself is the third example of American film makers mostly missing the boat on getting the wholly unique, Japanese concept of Godzilla right. I will say of the three films thus far, this one comes closest at rare times to being as enjoyable as the best of Toho’s films. The appearance of Rodan is arguably the highlight of the movie. The movie is a watchable as it is and hangs together due to the occasional thunderous monster battles.

On the other hand, I spent much of the movie praying the supremely annoying Dr Russell would get her come-uppence in the worst was. In fact, the US Godzilla movies second biggest weakness after shitty, stupid scripts littered with cringe-worthy dialog seems to be casting annoying actors, one thing Kong Skull Island mostly avoided.

Looking forward to checking out the 3D disc next.

There's been a lot of discussion about the film in the UHD thread. Seems pretty divisive with people either hating it or loving it. I'm in the latter camp myself. This is one of those releases that made me wish I had a much larger screen at home.

I loved the hell out of it. Most traditional Godzilla film the US has ever produced.

Can someone confirm the blu-ray will also have Atmos?

This is the back of the cover I have found, and seems like it says Atmos.

Ah, I’ll need to check that thread out, thanks. And I agree! I grew up on the classic Godzilla films and felt this was much closer to the spirit of those films, while still retaining the new style created by Gareth Edwards. I’m hoping the Monsterverse continues after KK v G.

Disappointing there aren't more store exclusives for this. Target did exclusive cover art/bonus extras for G14 and KSI. So far it seems I'm only getting the 4K UHD and the Best Buy 3D combo.

Yes. One of my favorites of the year. Mostly due to the kaiju rather than the humans though.

I'm not. BB UHD Steel for me, and done. That's expensive enough. I've bought enough Godzilla stuff this year that I don't need multiple copies of the movie.
